Slate is pricier than many other flooring materials, but it’s not the most expensive option on the market. For example, at $10 to $16 per square foot, slate flooring costs more than vinyl ($2 to $14 per square foot) and porcelain ($3 to $10 per square foot). However, it’s not quite as expensive as high-end marble flooring, which can cost up to $60 per square foot.
Tile installation costs about $2,000 on average. Costs vary widely depending on the installation site, the size of the area, the type of tile, the complexity of the design or pattern, and your home’s location. Prices range from as low as $400 up to $6,500 or more. Additional cost factors include the durability rating of the tile, the porosity of the tile, and the site prep requirements.
Some of the most common tile areas include:
Kitchen floor: $870–$6,100
Countertop or backsplash: $500–$3,000
Bathroom floor: $300–$2,400

You can technically install tile over tile, but we don’t suggest it. Installing tile over any surface that isn’t a completely flat and prepared subfloor will result in a shoddy overall job, uneven flooring, tiles that don’t adhere, extra weight, gaps, cracks, and room for moisture and dirt to enter. For the best results, only install new tile on a flat, sanded surface like subflooring or concrete that is prepared for tile.
If you have asbestos tile and would rather tile over it than remove it, or if your existing tile is completely flat and bonded tightly to the floor, you may be able to tile over existing tile. But experts recommend thinking twice before you do.
Just because you can, doesn’t always mean you should. You can apply new tile over existing tile in a bathroom, but the new tile may not look great if you lay it over worn, cracked, or uneven tiles. The adhesive may not be able to attach the new tile to the old tile properly, and this will add more weight to the drywall.
It takes more time and effort, but removing existing tiles before retiling a bathroom is worth it.
You have creative freedom when it comes to your tile trim. If, however, you are considering skipping tile trim, please think twice about that. It is good practice to install tile trim, whether on walls or flooring. Think, too, about the aesthetic you are going for and choose a trim type and color that will help enhance the space.
