There are many recognizable symptoms of AC compressor failure. They include loud banging noises, hot air being continually circulated in your home despite running the AC at full blast, uneven airflow and cooling, and electrical issues like constant surges due to the compressor working overtime. Unlike other types of air conditioning, portable units don’t require venting or any other associated parts like hoses. For that reason, they don’t function the same as their counterparts, but will do a similarly good job of cooling down small spaces and won’t require any installation or much maintenance.

The DOE is phasing out AC units with SEER ratings that fall below 14 or 15. The exact minimum rating depends on your region. In the northern United States, new ACs must have a minimum SEER rating of 14, though you can still buy and install older systems as long as they were compliant when they were manufactured. In the southern and southwestern United States, you cannot buy or install older air conditioners with lower SEER ratings. The minimum rating is between 14.5 and 15, depending on the power of the unit.

To keep your AC unit in good working condition, you should service your AC unit at least once per year. Your HVAC pro will inspect, clean, and replace parts as necessary. A great DIY option is to clean the evaporator coils every year, preferably before the summer months. Regular maintenance helps avoid costly repairs down the road.

If your home has an existing forced-air heat system, you can add a central air conditioner to it. An HVAC technician can retrofit your forced-air heating system by installing an evaporator coil onto the furnace plenum, the box next to the furnace that draws in air. Once installed, the air conditioning coils use the furnace’s blower to circulate the air.
