We asked for a "ballpark" estimate for the entire job using a specific product that we had selected. They were happy to provide that for us and they even itemized it to a certain extent and they wrote it down for us on paper. It was a pleasant surprise for us to see how low it was and we called them back a few days later to tell them we'd like to get going on the job. But we were told that the ballpark estimate was way off and that the actual price was going to be more than double what they had estimated. They apologized for the inaccurate estimate and we told them we'd wait. Next we looked around a bit more and discovered that Armstrong makes a line of Luxury Vinyl Tile that is manufactured in the U.S.A. with raw materials mostly from the U.S.A. - so we looked for a supplier. Peterson's was the only supplier we could find in our area, so we went back to them. This time we got a full estimate in writing and the owner told us verbally how much it would be. I questioned the owner about how little the estimate for installation was, but he insisted that every job is different. Again, I was pleasantly surprised. After I got home, I looked more closely at the written estimate and could see that he had, in fact, looked at the wrong number: The installation was several hundred dollars more than what he had said. I called and asked what it really was going to cost and (for the second time in a couple of months) he apologized for the inaccurate estimate. Quite honestly I was hoping he would give me some sort of discount - maybe just as a good-will gesture for having twice raised our expectations with really low estimates. But I guess he didn't feel all that bad about having made two such mistakes. Oh well. Despite all the trouble with the estimates, we had them do the job. The installer was 100% professional and always had a great attitude. The floor looks great. More recently we had a new floor installed in another part of our house. We got an estimate from the Petersons again, but we discovered another independent contractor who gave us a better price - so we went with him.

We definitely knew they were here because they made very little effort to clean up after themselves, brought my wife to tears. Dust and bits of trash in every room they worked in and outside on the lawn as well. Evidence was also left behind on every window frame because believe it or not, they used hammer and chisel to take out the old windows making huge gouges in the frame. Their remedy? They gave us a used can of stain with instructions how to make the gouges disappear. The kitchen windows also had moisture buildup most mornings. Were they remorseful for such slovenly work? The boss claimed that the crew I had was the most experienced and couldn't believe my complaints. Well, when he came down a couple of days later the mess was gone, nobody could leave their house like that. But the frame scars were there and thats when he gave me the can of stain. As I write this there are workers from Pella installing new windows (frame and all). Except for tools left behind, these guys leave very little evidence that construction work had been done. WindowRUs use a monkey in their advertisements. I'm at a loss about what the monkey represents, their workers or the perceived mentality of the customers.

From the beginning, Mr. Boram gave us the clear impression that he was doing us a favor by taking on the project. He eventually did agree to do it. We weren't impressed with the kitchen cabinet manufacturer that he deals with and decided to go with another contractor for the cabinets only. At the last minute, he calls to tell me that the job "wasn't the right fit for him". I asked him if it was because of the cabinets and he gave me a roundabout response and refused to do the job. With my wife's flight back to her "new" home drawing nearer, Mr. Boram had left me totally high and dry. I asked Mr. Boram if at least he could refer me to a reputable contractor and he said no. I had to start from scratch and the work was not completed by the time the rest of my family returned, forcing them stay in a hotel until conditions were safe enough for them to move in. I felt totally abandoned after he agreed to do the work and would never recommend him to anyone for fear that he could just walk away at any time. This type of don't-care attitude is to my mind extremely unprofessional. I would recommend only working with someone who actually wants your business, not a contractor that acts like he doesn't need you. Thankfully we now have a beautiful home with high-quality work and are very happy with how it looks, including the kitchen. The best time of year to remodel your home is late winter and early spring when fewer homeowners are thinking about projects and pros are more available. Also consider the type of remodel you want and plan ahead as much as possible. For example, the summer is a great time of year to update your fireplace, but winter is a better option for fixing foundations and building room additions.
