Small jobs welcome

"I wouldnâ t go near anyone else for insulation. Andrewâ s price was much lower and his expertise much higher. Andrew spray-foamed our ~4,000-square-foot home. His bid came in some $5,000 less than competitors, partly because as he convincingly showed me, other insulators are typically spraying far more than needed. I also did not want to spray directly on our 1880s-era wood siding or sheathing as spray foam is notorious for trapping moisture and leading to rot in wood. But he figured out a solution to create a 1-inch air gap behind the spray foam to allow that wood siding to dry out when moist. He also knew other insulation options and really with that above solution, I think we ended up with the best possible insulation for our historic house. I can tell his business is going to do very well in Ohio Valley & Pittsburgh area and wish him the best moving forward."

"Spray Foam Insulations LLP did a great job on my home project. Their quote was spot on and their customer service was excellent. I had a bit of a unique situation (at least I hope so), in that the previous owner of my house had constructed a back room extension over an old cement patio. The subfloor, sitting open over the cement was poorly insulated and basically a rodent hotel. I ripped up the floor, disposed of the fiberglass, cleaned up the subfloor and lined all the corners between joists, headers, cement, and support posts with doubled-up door-screening and 1/4-inch wire mesh. At that point Spray Foam Insulations LLP came in (we had previously scheduled), set up their equipment, prepped the area for overspray, and sprayed a nominal 3 (plus) -inches of closed-cell foam in a 12 foot by 18 foot area. They were done in about three hours. My biggest concern was closing all the gaps around the floor perimeter and they did. They hit every corner up, down, and sideways, and that floor is completely sealed, vapor tight, and the joists were significantly strengthened by the foam. The bottom line is, although I may have been able to attempt this work myself by ordering two large two-part kits on-line, I would not have done it near as well and it would have cost the same or close. Spray Foam Insulations resolved the above insulation issues for us with a high level of confidence. Great company. Great team. Call them for a quote. I did my research and their pricing is fair and they are honest."

"Roberto was the technician and he was very professional, polite, and personable. He inspected the rest of our system and told us things that needed to be changed or repaired. He showed me pictures of everything. Everything he told me about was accurate. He quoted me a price for R38 insulation , Some of our ducts were plastic and he recommended them to be changed. I agreed completely and didn't know they were plastic. I would have had them done the work but I had no price comparisons to make and besides I didn't have the money right then. So he just finished the vent cleaning and left his card. He did a great job on the vent cleaning and was happy with the work."

Insulation questions, answered by experts

Spray foam insulation can last between 80 and 100 years, depending on the type. Closed-cell spray foam is more durable, while open-cell foam is more susceptible to moisture damage and deterioration. It's important to consult a professional installer to understand which type of foam will be used and its specific longevity. Additionally, be aware that some spray foams can damage plastic piping, so if you have PVC or CPVC pipes, discuss this with your installer.

If you need to insulate behind finished walls, the best option will likely be to have an insulation professional install blown-in insulation. The installation requires small holes cut in your wall, after which the installer can blow loose-fill insulation into the void. After the installation, you’ll have minor drywall patching, which shouldn’t cost more than $100. Compared to ripping down the existing drywall, using a different type of insulation, and replacing and finishing the drywall, this should save you hundreds or even thousands, depending on the size of the room you’re insulating.

Hanging a thick blanket over your windows will help to keep the heat inside, but only a little. Covering the glass will also prevent the sunlight from getting in, which might actually decrease the efficiency of your window overall. If you get to the point where you’re hanging blankets over your window to keep warm, call in an expert to seal around your windows to prevent warm air from escaping. They may also recommend replacing old windows that aren’t as insulative as newer window technology. Sealing a window isn’t terribly expensive and can make a big difference.

No, 55 degrees Fahrenheit is not too cold for a house, as it’s a temperature that will keep your pipes and appliances from freezing. Well-insulated homes can even go to 50 degrees, but check with an HVAC pro before opting for such a low temperature. Stick to 55 degrees to be on the safe side.

At a minimum, blown-in insulation lasts 20 to 30 years. Cellulose and sheep’s wool come from natural materials, so they likely max out at around 30 years. Fiberglass and rockwool feature artificial materials that boast lengthy lifespans, up to 50 years, or even longer in some cases. As always, this timeline assumes you don’t run into any issues, such as flooding or mold, that shorten the lifespan.
