"Excellent work. We purchased natural cherry cabinets in shaker style, with the panels made of solid wood rather than veneer. That is more difficult work, as each panel has to be constructed from several planks. Moreover, the clear finish would leave any flaws more visible. Simply put, the doors are beautiful--flawless in both construction and finish. They are similar in quality to custom cherry furniture we own."

"We were pleased with the installation of our fire/security system. The workers explained what they were going to do and showed us how to use the alarm. When they were done the installation, they cleaned up. They also gave us a discount because we went through Angie's List."

"We hired Scott originally to replace 2 garage door openers. The charge for that work was so reasonable and the job well done we asked him to do more work. The biggest job was to remodel our granddaughters bedroom. It turned out so nice! He scraped the popcorn ceiling and repainted it with a really neat texture design. He painted the walls and trim and sanded and re-did the original hardwood floor which turned out beautiful. The overall price for the room was very reasonable. He is going to be doing more work for us down the road. I would highly recommend Scott for any work you need done."

"Phenomenal. Absolutely Phenomenal. I hired the first company without checking on them completely and was taken for a ride. The first company (not Moving Ahead) tripled the quote when they arrived at my door saying I underestimated how much stuff would be moved even though I had rented the whole truck. I researched Moving Ahead and they checked out on the BBB and other sites, so I gave them a try. The workers were there before they said they would, they were courteous, hard working, and quick! All of my antiques were carefully packed up, boxes placed were I wanted them. The driver arrived from Ohio (same workers came to unpack so I knew them and they knew my stuff) within 36 hours. HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend--I worked with Marton and he was amazing!!!!"

Doors questions, answered by experts

Yes, you can absolutely install an exterior door yourself, and installing a prehung exterior door requires few tools. However, exterior doors are heavy and bulky, and any mistakes during the installation process could have severe consequences, like a lack of security in your home, an increased risk of water getting in and causing damage, and an increased risk of pest infestation. It’s definitely possible to install an exterior door yourself, but it’s often a good idea to have a professional do it for you.

Yes, barn doors can be too heavy, although the limitation is usually imposed by the mounting hardware you buy and not your home’s framing, unless you’re building an unusually wide door. To keep the weight down, you can opt for 1-by material rather than 2-by material, and choose a softwood like pine rather than a hardwood like maple or oak. Check the weight limits on your mounting hardware, and always attach your door track to studs rather than to drywall anchors.

Here's an idea if you love pocket doors but prefer the barn door style: A pocket door that looks like a barn door. You might prefer pocket doors but still desire the rustic aesthetic of a barn door. You can simply choose a function pocket door with the same style as a barn door. There are many options available on the market to fit the look you want to achieve.

WD-40 can be used on squeaky door hinges, but it is generally considered a temporary, short-term solution rather than a long-term fix. While it can silence a squeak in a pinch by breaking down rust and grime, it is not a true lubricant, as it contains only a small amount of lubricating oil that evaporates quickly. Using WD-40 alone may lead to the squeak returning and can attract dirt and dust, potentially causing more wear on the hinge over time. For a more effective and lasting solution, it is recommended to first use WD-40 to clean the hinge, then wipe it clean. Afterward, apply a dedicated lubricant such as silicone spray, white lithium grease, a metal or plastic lubricant, or an oil-based product like petroleum jelly.

Ideally, a gate should be able to swing both in and out. However, if it can only open in one direction, it is generally best for it to swing inward. This is often the safest option, especially for deck gates near steps, as you'll want the gate to swing away from the stairs. An inward swing also prevents the gate from opening into a public space, like a sidewalk, and can be more convenient when carrying heavy items like a wheelbarrow into a garden.

There are exceptions, however. The layout of your property may require a different approach. For example, if your property is on a slope, the gate may not be able to swing inward. You should also ensure the gate can open fully without colliding with any objects or blocking access to other areas. For a backyard garden gate where public access isn't a concern, the direction it swings is largely a matter of personal preference. Finally, always check your local building codes, as they may have specific requirements for which way a gate must swing.
