"Initiall call returned in one day  and service was completed as promised.  crew of carpenters was excellent and fun to have working... certainly saved us  from a lot of labor that we were not quite willing to do ourselves.

UPDATE-6/6/15:

We used this company in the past for a roofing job that has since gone wrong, without appropriate follow-up or resolution from Bazell Maintenance & Remodeling. The door portion of the job in this review was originally very good, but as of now, you can hardly get the door open without yanking the knob off. I have yet to receive any resolution on this issue, either."

Gate Repair questions, answered by experts

Yes, most electric and automatic gates can be opened manually. They are equipped with a manual override or release mechanism that detaches the motor from the gate, allowing it to be moved by hand. This feature is essential during power outages or other emergencies.

To activate the manual override, you will typically need a specific key or tool. In some cases, you may also need a screwdriver to remove a cover to access the release mechanism. The use of a key is a common security measure to prevent unauthorized individuals from manually opening the gate.

Because every model is different, it is highly recommended to consult your gate's user manual to familiarize yourself with the specific procedure before you need to use it. Keep any necessary keys or tools in an accessible location. Be aware that automatic gates can be very heavy, so opening and closing them manually may be difficult.

In North America, electric gates are also subject to the UL 325 Standard for Safety, which includes provisions to allow emergency responders to access the property.

This largely depends on the layout of your property and your preferred walking route to various entryways. Take your time figuring out the perfect spot for the gate to avoid difficulties later on. With all this said, the best place to put a gate is an area free from obstructions that offer the shortest route to your house.

It can cost $100 to $500 to purchase and install a gate opener. You can use ready-made kits that come with DIY instructions. If you hire a professional gate installer to handle the job, expect to pay an average of $100 per hour or between $200 and $500.

You don’t need a permit for an automatic gate in most cities because it isn’t a structural change to your home, but you need to check. A pro can help you with this and since we don’t recommend installing an automatic gate yourself, you should already be in contact with one, making this a frictionless question. Outside of permit requirements, you need to consider your homeowners association (HOA), as some are against gated homes.

The cost to install a gate varies widely, with a typical range between $1,500 and $7,000. The average cost is around $3,500. However, the final price can be as low as $200 for a simple gate or as high as $12,000 for a large, automated security gate.

Key factors that determine the installation cost include:

  • Gate Material: This is a primary cost factor. Chain-link and vinyl are the most affordable, while wood and PVC are mid-range options. Wrought iron, aluminum, and other metals are the most expensive materials.

  • Automation: Automated gates are significantly more expensive than manual ones because they require motors, sensors, controls, and electrical installation.

  • Size and Type: The dimensions and style of the gate (e.g., swinging vs. sliding) will impact the price.

  • Security Level: Gates with advanced security features will increase the overall cost.
