"This place was awesome! Beth was super nice and patient in trying to help me pick out coordinating fabrics for 2 chairs from their huge selection. Al's staff also took the time to try and fix a small structural problem with the chair so there wasn't a gap between the chair and the footrest (that the last upholstery business I went to did not bother to do). They put in a new chair cushion too for one of the chairs and fixed the wobbly armrest. They had both chairs done by my deadline that I needed them by as well and made sure to notify me with voicemail and text so I knew they were done. The chairs looked absolutely beautiful. They were also so nice about wrapping them in plastic and helping me load them in my car as well. I can't say enough about how nice every single employee in this store was! I have dealt with many businesses and Al's Upholstery is head and shoulders above the rest and deserves an A+!"

Upholstering questions, answered by experts

Doing your own upholstery work is possible, but it’s typically a better idea to leave the work to professionals. Without experience and the proper tools, it’s difficult to get a professionally finished appearance for your furniture, and many DIYers end up spending money on tools and materials only to hire a professional when they can’t get the fabric to look right. If you have reupholstery experience, feel free to give it a shot. However, if you’re not confident in your skill level or you’re working with antiques, it’s worth the money to hire a pro.

Reupholstering an old or antique chair can be worthwhile if the frame is still sturdy and the piece has sentimental or monetary value. Reupholstery often costs less than buying a high-quality new chair, and you can customize the look. However, extensive repairs or rare fabrics may increase the total cost.

To safeguard your furniture and upholstered items, it's best to use plastic wrap or specially-made plastic sofa covers. However, you should avoid wrapping wooden furniture in plastic if you plan on storing it, as plastic can trap moisture and warp the wood, plus it may damage certain finishes. In either case, old blankets or moving blankets make excellent alternatives. For protecting delicate glass table tops and mirrors, bubble wrap is always a reliable choice.

You can make your dining room look more expensive using one or more of several methods. If you're remodeling, you can consider raising the ceiling height, installing an elegant chandelier, or redoing the floor. For smaller renovations, consider changing the paint color to a deep and rich tone, such as burgundy or emerald. You can also swap out the table and chairs to achieve a richer appearance.

Although it’s not standard, many upholstery professionals offer warranties on their workmanship, typically ranging from six months to several years. However, most warranties don't cover normal wear and tear, damage from spills and other accidents, or problems with the original furniture frame. Before starting your project, be sure to ask about warranty terms, what is covered, and any exclusions.
