"I couldn’t be happier with the work Legacy Improvements LLC fence did! Marcus and his crew extended my existing fence and added a gate, and everything turned out amazing. The crew was professional, on time, and paid attention to every detail to make sure the new section matched perfectly with the old fence. The gate works smoothly and looks great too. The whole process was easy from start to finish, and the quality of the work really shows. I highly recommend them to anyone looking for reliable, high-quality fence work!"

"Chris with Friesen Family Renovations, LLC was very professional and thorough in the work he has completed. He installed a new screen door, replaced my tub stem and faucet, repaired my subfloor in the kitchen and installed brand new LVP flooring to replace old and water damaged flooring. He also mounted a television for me, and did some drywall repairs as well. I would recommend this business to anyone looking for quality and dependable work!"

"We couldn?t be happier with our new deck! From start to finish, the contractor was professional, reliable, and paid attention to every detail. The craftsmanship is outstanding, and the finished deck looks even better than we imagined. He kept the work area clean, communicated clearly throughout the project, and completed everything on time. "I am very happy with the ramps. They are even better than I thought they would be. I got ramps because my dogs are getting older and were having a hard time coming up the steps. I wanted a ramp in the garage coming into the house and a ramp coming off the deck. Freedom Contracting built the best rams ever. Very sturdy and safe. They placed the ramps over the steps and attached with screws so the ramps could be taken down and removed if desired. The ramps are really great. I am very happy I hired Freedon Contracting and would certainly hired them again for other jobs."

Deck Repair questions, answered by experts

Although composite decking is extremely durable, it’s also susceptible to extreme heat. Prolonged exposure to sunlight can cause fading, warping, and cracking. Composite also retains heat more than wood, which makes it dangerous to walk on in the summer. You can help prevent heat damage by only building with composite in shaded areas or using rugs to cover the hottest spots.

Staining and sealing the underside of a deck creates a moisture barrier but traps water in the boards, quickly leading to rot. No matter how well you seal the above deck, water still gets through via nails and screw heads on the surface. Allow this water to flow naturally under the deck, where it is routed through the drainage system.

Deck skirting shouldn’t touch the ground, especially if you have a wood deck, which is vulnerable to moisture. Ideally, you should leave at least 3/4 of an inch of space between the deck skirting and the ground for more ventilation. Pros also recommend that you incorporate about 1 square foot of space for ventilation for the underside of the deck to every 150 square feet of decking. Proper ventilation prevents mold growth and rot that can damage your deck.

There are a variety of second-story deck privacy ideas depending on your budget and aesthetic. For starters, you might consider fencing or tall privacy railing that masks a good portion of the open deck. A pergola or an awning can provide additional cover and shade. Outdoor curtains are an easy way to add or remove privacy at your convenience, plus they’re a wallet-friendly way to decorate your deck.

Ideally, a gate should be able to swing both in and out. However, if it can only open in one direction, it is generally best for it to swing inward. This is often the safest option, especially for deck gates near steps, as you'll want the gate to swing away from the stairs. An inward swing also prevents the gate from opening into a public space, like a sidewalk, and can be more convenient when carrying heavy items like a wheelbarrow into a garden.

There are exceptions, however. The layout of your property may require a different approach. For example, if your property is on a slope, the gate may not be able to swing inward. You should also ensure the gate can open fully without colliding with any objects or blocking access to other areas. For a backyard garden gate where public access isn't a concern, the direction it swings is largely a matter of personal preference. Finally, always check your local building codes, as they may have specific requirements for which way a gate must swing.
