"I had a wood deck redone in composite. They used the existing frame and were able to add to it in order to increase the overall size. Nice group of guys did the work. The cuts are very clean and the deck is solid. It looks great! I requested a change towards the end of the project that required extra labor and they worked with me on that to get the deck just how I wanted. Would use their services again."

"Found Sentri on Angi. Jeanette and Violet were very pleasant and efficient in getting a contractor to me in the time frame needed. The contractor was excellent and the roof looks great! I would definitely work with them again if I had additional projects."

"Mike showed up the next morning.   He is very knowlegdeable, thorough and helpful.  He is very personable and talks in lay terms. He was ready to do whatever it took to make our house right again--the damage was extensive on the front of our home behind the clapboard (not visible until we removed them) and involved a window wall and structural members of the framing.  He would have pulled crews from other jobs to help us.  His estimate was right in line with other estimates we received.  I would agree with other reviewers that he seemed to have a high degree of integrity--there was a level of honesty and openness you do not often see in other contractors.  We were fairly certain that we wanted to have Bradford Xteriors do the work until we talked with our insurance company.  We did not end up selecting him, not because of anything he did or could not do but because the damage involved an insurance claim that required an attorney, an engineer and other services--we went with a full-service builder who helped coordinate all of these needs.  We would gladly consider using Mike and Bradford for future remodeling projects.

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

In framing, studs are placed at 16-inch intervals to coincide with the typical spacing of wall materials such as drywall or plywood. This spacing is called "on-center" and is necessary for maintaining structural stability and efficient use of materials. The 16-inch spacing also helps to distribute the weight evenly across the building's structure. For those looking to cut material costs and improve energy efficiency, 24-inch stud spacing can be employed through a method called "advanced framing". This requires careful planning and adherence to local building codes to ensure structural integrity.

Bump-out additions can add some space to a closet without requiring any significant structural work. This entails pushing back the existing rear or side of the closet, simply moving the wall into either an adjacent room or unused space. For ground-floor closets, this could even be extended to the exterior of the home, but that has its own complications. Bump-outs are a good discussion to have with your contractor if you’re just looking to increase the space a little—not renovate the entire closet space.

Converting a carport into a garage can vary in difficulty depending on its configuration, the condition of the foundation or slab, and its location relative to the house. The process has a lot in common with a home addition, but you can often skip non-essential finishes like fine flooring, trim work, or even drywall and HVAC. The conversion requires experience with drywall, insulation, and other building materials to ensure it’s done safely and correctly. While it might be possible for a DIYer with the proper tools and skills to do the work, it is a complicated and potentially dangerous job. If you’re new to basic construction, it's best to leave this project to the professionals.

The average cost of DIY window framing is about $40 to $60 in materials. If you hire a window treatment professional, you’ll pay for materials plus labor costs—anywhere from $250 to $800 per window. The final cost is highly dependent on the window size, as larger windows are heavier and more difficult to install, as well as the type of window framing material.

When choosing a drywall anchor, consider the weight of the object you're hanging and how much weight the anchor will need to support. The heavier the weight, the stronger the anchor you'll need. You’ll find the weight capacity on the packaging when shopping for anchors.

Also, remember that you can use more than one anchor when hanging something on the wall. If you're using multiple anchors, divide the object weight by the number of anchors to determine how much each will need to support. If you need help deciding which drywall anchor to use, you can hire a handyperson to hang your objects.
