Mold can grow on garage ceiling insulation, which is why it’s important to install a vapor barrier behind the insulation and keep the space cooled and heated as you would your living area. Yes, insulating your cold water pipes is a great way to prevent condensation. When warm, humid air meets cold pipes, condensation forms, which can drip and cause moisture issues in your home. Pipe insulation acts as a barrier between the warm air and the cold pipes, keeping condensation at bay and helping you avoid potential problems like mold or structural damage.

For your safety, you should always wear a mask when cutting batts of fiberglass insulation. We also recommend wearing eye protection, safety gloves, and long sleeves to protect your skin. Properly suiting up helps you avoid several fiberglass issues, such as cuts from the tiny shards of glass and inhaling small bits of fiberglass.

STC (Sound Transmission Class) ratings tell you how well something blocks airborne noise. It’s a single number that sums up how much sound a material, like a window, can stop across regular speech frequencies. The higher the number, the better the sound reduction. A typical single-pane window hovers around STC 25 (where you can hear normal conversations), while well-sealed, double-pane options can push past STC 45 (which blocks out loud speech and most music). It’s technically possible to install loose-fill cellulose insulation without a blower, but it’s much more time-consuming, tedious, and dangerous. That said, if you purchase cellulose materials at a home improvement store, ask if they rent out blowers for free or at a discounted rate. In many cases, if you buy the material from the store, they’ll rent out the blower at no extra cost.
