"We live in a cedar sided, large 3 story home. From my research for this kind of siding we needed to use an acrylic solid color stain and it should be hand-brushed, not sprayed. However, spraying the cedar siding was the mode of operandi of most of the painting companies I interviewed. Michael Stahl of MDS Painting is not like the other painters we had estimates from. We were lucky to find him because his practices fit all our requirements. He hand brushes. He recommended the solid color stain and he was going to try to paint it this summer if our weather permitted. Other requirements that I was hoping for but couldn't attest to until the job was done was honesty, reliability and cleanup when the job was completed. The completed job is beautiful. He did a great job. I highly recommend MDS Painting. Michael uses top of the line paint/stain, he's reliable, conscientious, skilled, careful, neat and an all around nice guy. His payment method is fair and there were no additional costs. He sticks with his estimate. Generally, you get what you pay for. We got what we paid for and more. We've already lined him up to do an interior job for us and will gladly pass his name on to anyone that needs painting done."

"I had a great experience with this contractor. I needed a quote on many projects and they were very versitile. I ended up only needing them for a painting project, but they did a great job, no hassle, they were the first and just about the only one who responded to my request on H.A. The price was very fair and the quality and efficiency of the work was greater than my expectations. I will continue to use this company in the future."

Deck Staining questions, answered by experts

It is not always necessary to remove old stain before restaining a deck. If the previous stain is in good condition and is compatible with the new stain, you may be able to apply a new coat after thorough cleaning. However, if the old stain is in bad condition, flaking, or peeling, it is best to remove it completely to ensure an even surface and proper adhesion for the new coat. Staining over a damaged layer can lead to an uneven finish and poor penetration. For best results, test a small area first and consult the stain manufacturer's guidelines.

Choosing whether your deck should be lighter or darker than your house is a matter of personal preference, as there is no right or wrong answer. However, considering the pros and cons of each can help guide your decision. Darker colors are often chosen because they show less dirt, footprints, and marks from daily wear, making them easier to keep clean. On the other hand, lighter deck colors tend to stay cooler in the summer. From a design perspective, using a deck color that contrasts with your home's exterior can help make the deck a more defined and distinct feature. Consulting color theory can also make the process of choosing a complementary house and deck color combination easier.

You have a couple of options when choosing a durable pool deck coating. Epoxy is common and offers excellent stain and water resistance. Epoxy also withstands high temperatures and UV lighting, making it ideal for sunny spots. You can also add a coating to cement, which significantly lowers the temperature of the concrete, is environmentally safe, and makes cleanup a breeze.

Satin paint is generally considered a better choice for woodwork—including trim, baseboards, cabinets, and doors—than flatter finishes like eggshell or matte. Its soft sheen enhances architectural details and stands up well to frequent cleaning and daily wear. Compared to eggshell and matte finishes, satin is more durable for high-touch areas because it is less porous and doesn't absorb dirt as easily. Matte finishes, in particular, are prone to scuffs and are harder to clean, making them less practical for surfaces like doors and cabinets.

Yes, you can and should paint or stain pressure-treated wood to help prevent the boards from cracking. However, you must wait for the wood to dry out completely before applying any finish. Freshly treated wood can take weeks or even months to dry; a common recommendation is to wait three to six months. To check if the wood is ready, perform a simple water test: drip some water onto the surface. If the water beads up, the wood is still too wet and needs more time to dry. If the wood absorbs the water, it is dry enough to be painted or stained. You can proceed with building your deck or fence while the wood is still wet, but you will need to wait to apply the paint or stain.
