You can paint over wallpaper, but it’s not usually recommended, especially if the wallpaper underneath is textured or dirty. If you do decide to paint your wallpaper, make sure it’s in good condition and clean it very well. Make sure all corners and edges of wallpaper are glued down before you paint, as well.

Alternatively, if you have old wallpaper you’d like to cover up, you can often paint over that instead of removing it. However, it needs to be smooth, damage-free, and non-textured. Otherwise, any bumps, tears, and texture will show through the paint.

Most jobs take 1-3 days, depending on room size and adhesive strength.

Mixing fabric softener into water is a low-cost way to remove wallpaper that has been passed among DIYers for years, but it has limited success. It works on some wallpaper, but not likely on vintage styles. Also, be careful, as it could interfere with the new wallpaper’s grip power.
