"I recently had several rooms painted by R &R Painting and Restoration. I was very pleased with the results. The work was done in a very professional way. Rick arrived on time each day and completed the job as per the estimate. He was neat and completely cleaned up each day. He did a great job and I would recommend him for your next painting project!!"

"Had an accent wall and kitchen wallpapered... could not be happier! Doug is very skillful and the walls are amazing. He also painted another accent wall black and the entire living area a neutral color. He was back today for touch ups and my home is now ready for the Holidays!!! I plan on seeing him in the Spring for patio staining! As a senior citizen, l am very picky as to whom l let in my home... l was very comfortable with him being here. I thought his rates were reasonable and l have no hesitation recommending him (highly)!!!"

Wallpapering questions, answered by experts

To layer wallpaper over wallpaper, inspect your existing wallpaper for problem areas. Damaged wallpaper should not be covered. If it’s okay to proceed, prep by turning off the electricity and removing any outlet and switch covers. Dust your walls and lightly rinse them to prevent the existing paper from peeling. Apply primer, then apply your new wallpaper.

One of the biggest downsides to peel-and-stick wallpaper is that it doesn't last as long as traditional wallpaper. Its lifespan depends on several factors, including the quality of the paper, proper wall preparation and application, and the room's conditions. As a general rule, peel-and-stick wallpaper can last for at least five years, but this can vary significantly. Budget products may only last about 3 years, while higher-quality products can stay up for 7 years or more in ideal conditions. Factors that can shorten its lifespan include high humidity (such as in a bathroom), dirty walls, and low-quality paper. If used on flooring, expect it to last only 1 to 3 years unless sealed. However, the shorter lifespan can be seen as a positive, making it a great choice for people who enjoy switching up their interiors more frequently.

Yes, you can apply peel-and-stick wallpaper over wood paneling, but it requires significant preparation for a good result. Peel-and-stick wallpaper has a weaker adhesive than traditional wallpaper and works best on smooth, non-textured surfaces like painted or primed drywall. Because wood paneling is often textured with grooves, any flaws in the underlying surface will likely be visible after application. To prepare the paneling, you must ensure the surface is free of cracks, holes, and protrusions by filling any indentations and sanding rough spots to create a smooth surface. An alternative is to remove the paneling and apply the wallpaper directly to the underlying drywall or plaster, provided it is in good condition.

When installing new steel doors, it’s smart to do other projects simultaneously. This can lower costs, limit mess, and help your home look and function better. For example, replacing a damaged doorframe is wise when planning door installations.

Also consider changing broken or worn-out locks, repairing or replacing weather stripping, and updating handles. Painting, staining, or upgrading the trim around the door can also improve energy efficiency, security, and aesthetics.

Wallpaper lasts an average of around 15 years, but there is some variance. The type of wallpaper matters, as vinyl wallpaper tends to last the longest—sometimes 20 years or more—while a peel-and-stick wallpaper, which is the easiest to install for DIYers, will usually only last for around five years. Exposure to high humidity, smoke, and UV rays from sunlight can also limit the lifespan of your wallpaper, as can heavy traffic in the installation area.
