"I had the pleasure of building two new homes with Jo Machinist in the past few years . I was looking for an architect that can put my imagination into reality . The project called for 2 homes on a horse farm, one for the horse trainer and one for the caretaker of the property . We wanted something that spoke to the style of the farm. Homes that had an interesting design and were functional to the operation. Jo hit the nail on the head so to speak. She designed the homes with style and functionality. Each house has high ceilings, open layout, with patios and porches plus mud room access which is important considering the elements the property deals with. She convinced me to upgrade all windows to larger sizes which added lots of natural light to living space. The final result upgraded the look of the property. I am very happy with the finished product and highly recommend working with her . She not only Provides the technical and architectural part of the project, in every step of the process she takes design and functionality into consideration."

"Ryan was fantastic! We wanted a large pergola built in our bar’s backyard. Ryan helped us design it and did the back-work to make sure we got what we wanted, while constructing it legally and safely. He also helped us get all the features we wanted in a way that was the most cost effective. We will go with Ryan anytime we need an architect from here on out!"

"I?m Patti Phelps from Prime Estimation in Plano, Texas. We recently hired NextEdge Builders Corporation for an architectural project, and I supervised the work throughout. We first had them prepare our architectural drawings, and their output was excellent ? clear, accurate, and professionally done. After the drawings were completed, we moved ahead with a cost estimate, which turned out to be highly accurate, around 98?99%, and very reliable for our budgeting. What I appreciated most was how smoothly their drafting and estimation teams work together. Having both services under one company saved a lot of time and avoided unnecessary coordination. I confidently recommend NextEdge Builders Corporation for anyone needing dependable drafting and estimation services across Architectural, Electrical, Plumbing, and Mechanical scopes."

Structural Engineering questions, answered by experts

The primary reason homes have crawl spaces is so the foundation can reach down below the frost line to avoid dangerous soil movement and structural damage when the ground freezes. They’re more popular in colder climates where the ground freezes down to a few feet, and slabs are most popular in warmer areas where there is no frost line. Crawl spaces also provide a space for utility lines to run where they’re at less of a risk of freezing.

According to the Earthquake Country Alliance—a public and private alliance in California that works to improve earthquake and tsunami readiness—reports that unreinforced masonry, such as stone, bricks, and hollow clay tiles, is more susceptible to earthquake damage. The mortar between bricks isn’t as stable as other building materials and methods.

Foundation cracks that are 1/8 inch wide or less, aren’t uneven across the gap, and don’t continue widening over time are usually just normal settling cracks and don’t suggest structural issues. Horizontal cracks and stair-step cracks on foundation walls, any cracks that continue widening, are wider than 1/8 inch, or where one side juts out beyond the other, are often indicative of structural damage.

All foundations have footers, including monolithic slabs. In some cases, the foundation itself acts as the footer, as in the case of a floating slab and a monolithic slab. With a monolithic slab, the footers—which are just the bottom-most portion of the foundation that distributes loads down to stable soil—are a part of the main slab and are constructed with a single pour.

The 10 10 rule describes the formula most contractors use to determine how much to charge for a job. Allowing for 10% overhead above the total projected cost to do the work and 10% profit sets a contractor up for success, even if there are delays or other problems on the project. This formula isn’t a hard-and-fast rule, but it is a ballpark figure to begin with when estimating your expenses on a job.
