We had 6 wooden dining room chairs which were my grandmother's (so at least 60 years old, as she died at 90ish); wooden backs, seats worn through and what appeared to be kapok stuffing falling out here and there. Not particularly good quality chairs I don't think, but of sentimental value to me. We also had another, nonmatching wooden chair which I wanted reupholstered in a matching fabric. All had dings and scratches and occasional loose joints, and we had put sticky felt on the bottoms of the legs to avoid scratching our dining room floor. I telephoned to ask if he could do the job, phone was answered promptly and pleasantly by Mr. Hayden himself, appt made for us to bring chairs to him the following day (a Saturday in early June 2013). I did not have upholstery cloth picked out, he said fine to get it elsewhere (he could tell us how much needed after seeing chairs) or he had some we could look at. Address he wanted chairs brought to was different from that listed as Havenhouse Upholstery on Google (it appears on Google as Havenhouse all one word); appeared to be his home when we got there. He had a furniture-filled workshop in his back garage which is where we dropped off the chairs; he had about a dozen different rolls of upholstery cloth of different patterns/fabrics in the back of his minivan and we chose one we liked from that selection (I am perfectly happy with what we chose, but do not consider myself a picky shopper in matters of style -- durability and stain resistance more important as we have kids, and he recommended some of what he brought as more durable than other fabrics, we chose from those). Estimate was $575 for reseating/upholstery/stain guarding and $200 for repairs to chairs (he said refinishing was not recommended for chairs like these, and that was not our focus anyway), paid by check $250 deposit. He said it would take several weeks. Late June I called to check and let him know we would be unreachable for a week, he said he was almost done. As arranged he called me after we returned to arrange pickup, appt made for next day. He stated repairs had been more extensive than estimated and would be an extra $75 (I made no quibbles). Place to pick up was another different address. I had to call to confirm address twice (trouble entering into GPS) but each time Mr. Hayden answered right away himself and was immediately helpful. and quot;Haven House Upholsteryand quot; or similar not seen on signage of building at that address when I arrived so I phoned; he drove to where I was (took 1 minute) and led me back to a storage unit containing a workspace and lots of furniture including our chairs. He helped me load up and I paid remainder by check to him personally, receiving receipt with both Haven House Upholstery and his name at the top which lays out work done nicely but does not include tax line (I have to assume sales tax was included in the price). Quality of the work: seats look great, very comfortable to sit on with good firm/soft balance for both me (short and fat) and husband (tall and thin), fabric fits tightly and is beautifully folded over corners and evenly trimmed underneath, a lot better than the original seats even before they wore through. The fabric we chose had a herringbone pattern which would show minor faults in alignment easily and this was perfectly aligned on each chair. Wood had greatly diminished ding/scratch appearance, still present (as expected) but have to look a lot harder to find them. Joints very stable now, no leaked glue visible (if he used glue; I didn't ask how he made repairs). Unasked, he had replaced the sticky felt pads under each chairleg with the same color and thickness we had used. Overall, I am very pleased with the work quality. Timing and what would and could not be done was all accurately explained in words I could understand. Cost was a bit more than original estimate but I believe the chairs deserved this as he hadn't tested the joints a lot before making his estimate, and this is not a visible problem. I had expected more of a storefront experience given the name and quot;Havenhouse Upholsteryand quot; but reaching and dealing with Mr. Hayden was easy at all times. My only concern is the lack of evidence of having paid sales tax on the receipt, which I did not notice until I got home. I would use him again if needed; he seems to be a real craftsman who cares about quality and that is well worth putting up with a slightly less-than-slick business demeanor. Went on the roof to check out the sewer vent stack - as that was the only pipe above the area of concern. It appeared that the rubber seal around the vent pipe was pulled slightly away from the pipe - hence the conclusion that rain was most likely running down the outside of the vent pipe, running along the horizontal pipe as is crossed the kitchen and, at the elbow above the dryer in the adjoining pantry, was dripping onto the ceiling and causing the mildew. The estimate we received was based on the "worse case scenario." At $1800 this included 3 days of work - first cutting open the ceiling & checking out the problem, correcting whatever the problem was (after all it may not be water outside the pipe - it may even be a roof leak for all we knew), removing insulation and replacing it with new insulation, closing the opening in the ceiling and painting it and replacement of the rubber seal on the roof. When the workers arrived (along with the owner who got them started and then left) I was reassured that the dryer did not have to be moved - they could work around it by putting a piece of plywood on it and using it to reach the ceiling. The first day all went exceptionally well. A small 1 foot square hole was cut out of the ceiling to check out the problem. They immediately found the issue: the elbow for the sewer vent pipe was fastened to the pipe coming up from the basement, but the horizontal pipe heading across the kitchen to the vent stack was not attached to the elbow. Rain water was coming down the vent pipe and exiting onto the ceiling instead of down the pipe. In other words they simply had to glue the joint - a matter of minuets. No materials needed to be purchased for the repair. This also indicated that the rain was NOT running down the outside of the pipe as we once thought. The two men quickly and easily glued the pipe to the elbow, put some new insulation in the hole, added a new piece of drywall and sealed the hole back up, plastered it and as it dried, checked out the roof vent. There, they decided the rubber seal was not an issue, so they caulked around it, and added some caulk under a couple of surrounding shingles to seal the area and complete the job. They were then finished for the day. The next day (second day) one man came out to the house to sand the ceiling patch and paint the small ceiling in the pantry. He was finished before noon. Unfortunately the guy on the second day did not use plywood on the the dryer and after he left we discovered the entire top of the dryer was full of dents from him standing on it all morning. When I got the bill i was surprised that I was charged the full amount from the estimate, especially since I had been told the estimate was a "worse case scenario" - after all it might involve roof repairs and other unforeseen issues. Even the workers had said this was an easy fix. It certainly didn't take 3 days (nor 3 trips out - with mileage, etc). I called and talked with the owner. I was concerned that he charged me for 3 days instead of 1 and a half days, and the rubber seal wasn't replaced (per the contract) - although I feel fine that the caulk around the seal was enough (He charged $450 for the 10 minute caulking job). I also mentioned that my dryer was now dented from his worker walking on it without protecting it. He insisted it was 3 days (apparently when 2 men are working for the day it's considered 2 days). He took $100 off the bill for the dents in the dryer - and provided no solution to repairing the dryer.

Once in their shop, we assumed that they would inspect and access the necessary work to repair the appliances. They just started working on them without providing any time or cost estimate or even to tell us what was wrong. After about a week, I was told that the 2-drawer refrigerator was repaired but they were still working on the ice maker. I had asked if they could at least deliver the refrigerator and was told that they can not (or would not) deliver them separately. As months went on, I would call with regular frequency to find out the status only to be told that someone would call me back later. Of the two dozen times I called over the almost 6 months they had the appliances, only 2 phone calls were ever returned. Eventually, I called one Friday at 4:30 p.m. and got an answering machine telling me that they were closed and their hours were Monday through Friday, 8-5. I left a scathing message saying that I was fed up with the lack of returned phone calls and information and insisted that someone call me back the following Monday. As expected, Monday came and went without a phone call. Finally on Tuesday, someone called me to tell me that they appliances were fixed and ready to be installed and that someone would call me Wednesday or Thursday to set up a time to install them as well as give me a cost. As expected, no phone call was ever received. We didn't know when they were going to arrive on Friday as they never called to let us know and after re-installing all the appliances, demanded to be paid on the spot for an amount we had no idea what was going to be. Luckily we had the money to do so, but if you don't happen to have a spare couple thousand dollars in your account when they show up, you might be in trouble. Absolutely horrible experience and torture to deal with."},"url":"https://www.angi.com/companylist/us/ny/hudson/ackermans-appliance-reviews-2192563.htm"},"position":10}]}
