"A contract was written up and everything on the contract was completed and then some. Job was finished as expected and site was cleaned up. These guys are young and I think with more experiences they will be better with time management. They guarantee their labor for 10 years. We are going to have them back to do some chimney repairs next week."

"They were attentive to our needs but made suggestions that we never would have thought of, making the project better. They were very receptive to our choice of materials and went the extra mile to find the materials we wanted for the job. Will use them again if needed and would heartily recommend them. Dock Building and Repair questions, answered by experts

Here are a few other considerations before you build, even if you're convinced you're in compliance with the law:

  • Are you damaging the environment? Bodies of water are often delicate ecosystems, and building a dock can be destructive and disruptive to the wildlife.

  • Are you blocking access? Lots of people like to use a lake, so you need to make sure your dock doesn't block public access to the water.

  • Can you enclose the dock? Just because you can build a dock doesn't mean you can build any dock you want. Some areas don't allow enclosed docks, for example.

  • Do you need to follow any specific rules or guidelines? Check with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA) Office for Coastal Management for any guidelines you’ll need to follow, including size and type restrictions.

If you don’t want to rely on an anchor on land, you can also build dock posts. You’ll need to rent a water jet to blow out sand and silt from the lake floor in order to place the posts; it’s a complicated task that is best left to a professional.

Common features in lakefront landscaping projects include native and water-tolerant plants, stone paths, docks or piers, seating areas, and erosion control solutions to create a harmonious integration with the waterfront setting.

Costs depend on dock type, size, materials, water depth, and labor.

The average cost of a new dock piling is $950, including the labor to install it. Dock piling costs can range from $300 to $1,600. You can save money by trying to repair a damaged piling instead of replacing it. On average, repairing a boat dock piling costs $450, with prices ranging between $200 and $700.
