Yes, a pressure washer uses less water than a garden hose. There are many ways to use a pressure washer, and it can be an eco-friendly hose substitute. While a pressure washer expels water with greater force, it uses 50% to 70% less water than a garden hose. Once you see how well your pressure washer cleans, it’s easy to get carried away and want to blast everything. But some surfaces handle pressure washing better than others. Avoid pressure washing anything electrical, painted (unless you want to strip the paint), or delicate, like glass. And even though you can pressure wash wood or other porous surfaces, select a lower-powered pressure washer and wide-angled nozzle to prevent damage.

No, asphalt shingles should not be power washed. A power washer or pressure washer is too strong to use on asphalt shingles and will loosen the adhesive holding them to your roof, causing them to fall off. It’s best to hire a local roof cleaner to clean those shingles safely and without damaging them.

Do not use bleach when pressure washing, either in the machine or on the driveway itself. Bleach in a power washer will corrode the seal and nozzles of the machine. Spraying bleach (whether out of the machine or on the driveway itself) blasts bleach into the air. Bleach can be highly dangerous if inhaled, and it can kill plants, flowers, and neighbors' animals that accidentally ingest it.

You can get more pressure out of your pressure washer by adjusting the pressure control knob clockwise to increase pressure (+). You can also check your nozzle for debris and clogs and remove anything you find with needle nose pliers. Switch to a nozzle with a lower-degree spray angle or a turbo nozzle to achieve more pressure at the tip. Check for leaks in the hose and connections, and make sure your water supply is offering enough pressure.
