"I needed to have a substantial amount of dirt moved from the addition that i had started on my house. The original excavator who did the job was not able to come out for some time. I didnt want the dirt to sit any longer as it was impeding other jobs from continuing. Josh was able to come out the same week i was looking for estimates and remove all that dirt. He cleared out the area with precision and i was able to see my yard once again. Would definitely do business with SJ Excavation again!"

Excavating questions, answered by experts

Hitting shallow bedrock or rock ledges requires specialized equipment, which increases expenses. Uncovering unregistered buried fuel oil tanks or contaminated soil demands strict environmental remediation. High groundwater near the lake forces continuous pumping during excavating. You face extra expenses if crews discover deteriorated utility lines, or if early NY lake-effect snowstorms delay your project timeline and require additional site mobilization to secure the area.

Helpful?

Always call 811 to mark underground utilities before starting any excavating work. Obtain all required local permits for foundation, drainage, or sewer projects. Schedule your project between late April and October, as frozen winter ground makes the work extremely difficult. Assess your Oswego soil conditions early to prevent surprises. Review local floodplain maps and check environmental regulations if your property sits near the river or lake.

Helpful?

Your foundation perimeter is the most likely area to require excavating, as heavy snowmelt and clay soils constantly stress drainage systems. Aging sewer laterals and old water service lines degrade over time and demand complete replacement. Frost heave damages foundation walls, requiring exterior excavating for proper waterproofing. Driveway sub-bases also deteriorate from severe Oswego freeze-thaw cycles, forcing complete removal and re-grading to fix the settling.

Helpful?

Watch for cracked foundation walls or uneven slabs caused by frost heave, which show previous excavating was too shallow. Persistent basement water intrusion after the heavy Oswego spring snowmelt points to failed drainage systems. Look out for settling or sinkholes in your yard, indicating improperly compacted backfill. Sewage odors or slow drains reveal failing sewer lines. Address these excavating issues promptly to protect your home from further damage.

Helpful?

Start by assessing your foundation drainage and installing a perimeter drain, as NY soils contain heavy clay that drains poorly. Correct the grading around your foundation to prevent basement flooding during heavy snowmelts. Inspect your sewer laterals for collapsed pipes or root intrusion, which require excavating to repair. Evaluate your septic system or decommission old underground oil tanks to keep your property safe and compliant.
