"Sam and his crew are very professional . They repaired leaking roof vents and other problems that we weren't aware of until Sam went up on the standing seam metal roof. He took before and after pictures which we really appreciated. I would definitely recommend Sam and Next Level Roofing."

"Hard sales tactics that some people will find very frustrating. The first quote was at $30k and we ended up at $12k after we turned away the sales team and a manager came out to the house to give us a second pitch. We ended up with a commercial grade window."

"Layman Construction was very professional. Appreciated meeting with Robert after he visited and assessed our needs to discuss options. Work was completed quickly and our property was kept clean and safe during the week or so it took to complete the job. Our roof, although the house is not large, has many peaks and valleys including a large stone chimney, making the job a less than straight forward.Compared 3 other contractors before deciding on Layman. Layman offered the best value given their reputation and experience. Very happy with our new roof! The Layman team was great to work with!"

Roofing questions, answered by experts

Yes, shingles should overhang the drip edge, typically between 1/2-inch and 3/4-inch. An overhang shorter than 1/2-inch can allow wind-driven rain to get under the shingles and damage the roof deck or fascia. Conversely, an overhang longer than 3/4-inch increases the risk of shingles getting caught by strong winds, which can lead to roof uplift. Always check your local building code for exact overhang requirements in your area.

Sticky shoes help, but you shouldn't be walking on the steel roof— let the pros do that. it's dangerous enough to walk on asphalt shingled roofs which have quite a bit of texture. Stone coating adds a lot of grip, but it still doesn't lock your foot down, so if you absolutely have to be on the roof, make sure you’re secured in another way, like with the harness and rope.

White is the most energy-efficient color for roofs because solar energy reflects off white surfaces the best. Silver is also a good choice.

Though cedar shakes often get confused with shingles, there are a few key differences between wood shakes and wood shingles. For one, cedar shingle prices are lower, although shingles are less durable than wood shakes. Cedar shakes are thicker than shingles (shingles range from about 3/8 to 1/2 inches thick, compared to 1/2 to 3/4 inches thick for shakes). Wood shakes are handmade, while shingles are usually machine-made. Also, wood shakes work better on steeper roofs than shingles do. While the cost of cedar shingles is more budget-friendly, there are many great reasons to choose shakes.

The golden ratio for roof pitch is 1:1.62. It’s simply a standard aspect ratio that home and building designers and architects use when deciding how steep a roof should be to maintain visual appeal. The golden ratio can apply to any home or structure with a visible roof that isn't considered a flat roof.
