"Great! John, the owner was super helpful and nice on the phone. Eased all our concerns. The crew, Phil and Tim, showed up right on time and were able to locate the service caps in the lawn in 10 minutes. They showed me clearly how full the tanks were and clearly explained the problem and the solution. The prices quoted were very fair and there were no surprises. It took around 90 minutes. The job was all done outdoors and when they left you would never know it was done. Very neat and professional. The odors, etc we had were gone and we noticed the drains all flowing more freely. Exactly as they said. So glad we had this done before it became a serious and ugly problem inside the house. We highly recommend Priority Cesspool Sewer and Drain. Thank you!"

Small jobs welcome

"Mario of Mario’s Faucet and Toilet Repairs in Bayshore NY was courteous and efficient. He cleared the clogged pipe and got the plumbing back in working order. He’s been doing this for 10 years so he’s very experienced. I think the price was very fair for the work done. I would highly recommend him for plumbing and drain issues. Thank you Mario!"

"Vinnie came to give me an estimate to remove and replace the fluidmaster and flapper in my master bedroom's bathroom toilet. He arrived looking very professional and confident in his abilities to fix my problem. He patiently explained what it would take to fix the toilet and quoted a very reasonable price. I decided to make an appointment with him for the repair, but he advised me that he had all the parts he needed on the truck and, since he was already here, why not do it now? I didn't hesitate to agree and I don't regret my decision. Although Vinnie is a young man, he approached the job with an old world work ethic . He completed the job in practically no time, had everything he needed, and when he ran into an unexpected snag, had those parts too. When Vinnie entered my home today for the first time, he stated that he wanted to become my plumber, the plumber I will call in the future for all my plumbing problems. After witnessing the manner in which he works, I will definitely call him again should I have plumbing issues in the future. I wholeheartedly recommend Vinnie for his expertise, politeness, professionalism, cleanliness and competitive prices. Thank you."

Toilets questions, answered by experts

Costs depend on door material, labor, additional hardware, and whether structural modifications are needed.

No, you can’t convert a gravity-flush toilet to a pressure-assist toilet. Pressure-assist toilets include a tank-within-the-tank, and a standard gravity-flush toilet doesn’t have a capability to include the additional tank. If you want the benefits of a pressure-assist toilet, you’ll have to make the investment in a new one.

You can tell if your toilet fill valve is full by removing the lid and taking a look. When you flush the toilet, the float is at the bottom of the tank, the water empties, and the fill valve opens. The float rises to the top as the tank fills again with water. When the float rises to the right level, the fill valve closes; if the valve is too high, your toilet may only partially flush, requiring you to adjust the float.

Toilets typically connect to your main vent stack, a vertical pipe that runs through all finished levels of your home and exits through the roof. It’s located behind the walls, but if you have an unfinished basement or a utility closet, you may find a portion of it running the vertical length of the space. Some basement toilets use an air admittance valve instead, which is a small vent located in the wall directly behind the toilet that extends upward a few feet from the drain.

Hiring an emergency plumber is expensive because of the urgency and inconvenience, but there are a few things you can do to help keep costs down:

  • Minimize water damage by shutting off your water main

  • Clean up pooling water immediately to reduce damage and mold growth

  • Avoid using fixtures if you have a clog or septic system backup

  • Verify that your plumber is licensed before hiring

  • Call a few plumbers for estimates if you can afford a short delay in getting service
