"In a nutshell: Work - done well and in timely manner Price - somewhat high (no complains, I agreed to pay it voluntarily and without bargaining) Delay with invoice and some strangeness around it - uncomfortable. Long Story: I submitted a quote request to Angi. The contractor called within an hour, it was one from the list and was available next morning to estimate. The contractor came in time, was polite and professional, quickly surveyed the roof and pointed out a potentially damaged area; I got a quote for the complete job: gutter cleaning+repair and a small roof area patch. Price-wise - twice as much as I got meanwhile from others for cleanup only. I figured it makes sense to hire, because of them being capable to perform both cleanup and additional roof repairs. I checked the company on the web - looked legitimate. Next morning two workers came in promptly. They had no forms or contract for me to sign, but I thought it's ok for such a small job. Both spoke very little English, I speak no Spanish. so our communication options were very limited, but they wore T-shirts with company logo and appeared to be familiar with what has to be done. They completed the job in about an hour and sent me the photos of the cleaned gutter and repaired roof patch. And here comes the bizarre part: I offered a credit card to pay. Since COVID began, most of the contractors and other services switched to the contact-less payments so it caught me by surprise that they weren't. The workers appeared to be baffled; one of them dialed the boss and let me talk. I was asked to pay cash or check; when I mentioned credit card, the person on the phone (that was super-articulate the day before) mumbled something incoherent. At that point I was felling uncomfortable with this whole situation. I didn't feel like paying few hundreds $ in cash as it all got stranger by the minute, the workers visibly disappointed. I wrote a check, sent the photo of the check to the contractor via SMS and asked for invoice. The contractor responded by saying it'll be emailed to me. I messaged my email address several times. At one point I got the SMS that the invoice is sent - stating a wrong email. After few more attempts, two days later the person picked the phone again - this time I said that I am about to submit a one-star rated review. Got an invoice at last, something to hold onto. Phew!"

The cost of home remodeling is $50,000 for the average homeowner. However, this cost can range anywhere from $3,000 for a small project to $170,000 for a whole home remodel. Factors like project size, location, and room type all affect your overall cost. For example, bedroom remodeling costs are one of the least expensive projects, costing about $1,500 to $5,500 per bedroom. However, a kitchen remodel has a significant cost range, totaling anywhere from $14,500 to over $70,000.
Yes, most states require home remodeling contractors to be licensed, and for good reason. Hiring an unlicensed home remodeling contractor could lead to poor quality work, costly future expenses, and potential code violations.
As you browse our pro listings, take note of the “Angi Approved” badge. Angi Approved businesses meet our standards for certification which include:
The owner, principal, or relevant manager passed a criminal background check
Required to have applicable state and local licenses
Maintain an average star rating of 3.0 or better on our network, if they have at least one review
Paying to advertise their services
Meeting any other eligibility criteria required by Angi
Keep in mind licensing is different from certifications. A license is a legal requirement to operate a business, while certifications are voluntary.
The best time of year to remodel your home is late winter and early spring when fewer homeowners are thinking about projects and pros are more available. Also consider the type of remodel you want and plan ahead as much as possible. For example, the summer is a great time of year to update your fireplace, but winter is a better option for fixing foundations and building room additions.
There are a few things you can do to prepare for a home remodeling project to ensure a smooth construction process. Creating a detailed budget can help you stay on track, especially with the excitement of new construction or upgrades. It’s also beneficial to map out a remodeling timeline with your contractor to have clear expectations. In addition, you’ll want to prepare the space that will be worked on ahead of time—this could be tarping furniture or entirely removing belongings from the room.
Home renovation insurance, sometimes called “dwelling under renovation coverage” or “builder’s risk insurance,” helps financially cover any damages that occur during the home renovation process. While different from typical homeowners insurance, many homeowners insurance policies already include some sort of home renovation insurance or offer it as an additional add-on. While this insurance isn’t necessary for every home remodeling project, it’s best to contact your insurance company to verify if it’s needed and what your coverage options are.
