Small jobs welcome

"Michael and his co-worker were prompt, neat, respectful of our property, took the time to do all necessary prep work, and professional. They did carpentry work as well as painting. They showed up on time and completed the job quickly. They did excellent work. Michael returns phone calls, visited the site, gave a prompt proposal and gave us a reasonable start date. These are qualities that are hard to find! Highly recommend."

"Tassio is one of the very best, if not THE BEST worker that I have hired during the 43 years that I have owned my home. He is honest, smart, punctual and reliable. He reviewed everything with me as he did it and explained carefully why everything that needed to be done needed doing. He replaced multiple sheets of the cedar siding on my house and uncovered many areas which the original builders did not do properly. He needed to repair some underlying plywood in addition to replacing the cedar. He was meticulous in his work. He used flashing tape and Tyvek paper over the plywood and used galvanized nails and screws. He also painted some indoor walls that had been damaged by previous water leaks. His workers did an excellent job. They were efficient and neat. They did not splatter paint where it was not supposed to be. He also pointed out other issues with my house that were not part of this repair and which I will deal with separately. I would hire him again in a minute."

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Costs depend on furniture type, size, complexity, and whether additional modifications are needed.

You should avoid drilling or cutting into load-bearing beams because removing material will weaken it and increase the risk of structural damage or even collapse. If you do need to drill into a load-bearing beam, speak with a structural engineer first to discuss where it’s safest to drill and the width and depth of the bit that’s safe to use.

You may need a permit to install your window seat. Even though it's an indoor modification, some municipalities require permits for any built-ins added to homes. Check with your carpenter or, if you're DIY-ing, do some research on your city's requirements.

When deciding if you should use 2x6 or 2x8 deck joists, consider the size of the deck, joist spacing, and materials. Larger decks, larger-spaced joists, and weaker wood all require more support, meaning they need larger joists. For example, 2x8 redwood joists spaced 16 inches apart can only safely span up to 10 feet and 7 inches. On the other hand, 2x10 southern pine joists spaced 12 inches apart can be as big as 16 feet and 2 inches. If you aren’t sure what size joist is best for your project, speak with your deck builder.

It’s sometimes safe to replace a load-bearing wall with a beam, but you need a structural engineer to sign off on the project. You’ll also likely have to upgrade to a steel I-beam or another material that’s stronger than wood to maintain the level of support you need without the wall underneath.
