"Had a clogged kitchen sink drain. Jason called within an hour of my query on Home Advisor. Set appointment for the next morning. He and his helper arrived on time and cleared the clog in my kitchen sink drain within 15 minutes using their powered snake. Clog was in the basement but they were able to clear it from the drain pipe under the kitchen sink. They reattached the trap, checked for leaks and good flow, cleaned up what little mess there was. Price was reasonable for the service call. Will use again if a need arises. This company only does sewer and drain service, no other plumbing services."

"Dan was able to come out on a Sunday very last minute to work on a clogged sink for my mom. He was beyond professional during our communication. Not only did he do a fantastic job, he kept me in the loop the whole way through. He was very thorough and clean (my mom is clean/neat freak). I would absolutely recommend him to others and will use him again."

Drain Cleaning questions, answered by experts

You should hire a sewer service professional to unclog a main sewer line with tree roots. Tree roots can grow into the main sewer line, and this problem requires a specialized hydro jet, or rooter, that is powerful enough to clear the roots. The tree can also damage the main sewer line, and a professional will need to make repairs or replace the damaged sections. Sewer line replacement costs about $60 to $250 per linear foot.

Although linear drains allow water to flow quickly and efficiently, they tend to clog more easily than traditional drains. Linear drains are flush with the shower floor, allowing soap scum and hair to potentially build up. They’re also longer than other drains, allowing for more space to let debris fall into the drainpipe.

Main sewer lines can clog for several reasons. For example, if you regularly dump oil or grease down your drain, it could eventually block your line. Sometimes, tree roots can penetrate and grow inside old sewer pipes, creating a major blockage. Flushing bulky items (like paper towels, diapers, or baby wipes) can also clog your plumbing system.

The best drain cleaners are biodegradable ones or a mixture of baking soda and vinegar. Strong, caustic chemicals may seem appealing with promises of unclogging your drain quickly, but liquid drain cleaners can cause damage to your pipes over time. Consider making your own drain cleaner with baking soda and vinegar.

A bit of water in the bowl can help unclog a toilet, especially if you're using a plunger. However, if the bowl is full to the brim, you'll need to strap on gloves and remove some of the wastewater in a cup or container so it doesn't overflow when you try to unblock the pipe. If you're concerned about it filling further, manually close the flapper in the toilet tank or turn off the water supply to the toilet.
