"Soltys remodeling did an excellent job! We started with remodeling our basement. They did such a wonderful job that we got our kitchen, dining area, and also the bedrooms remodeled! Very professional, cheerful, and detail oriented. I strongly recommend them."

"I want to start out by saying Doug and his sons are very pleasant and their workmanship is good. It became obvious we took a back seat to another customer, whom he referred to as his “bread and butter”, and he withdrew his commitment to do extra work, that we had agreed upon early at the onset of the job. My “finished” basement was left unfinished, doors and window were not trimmed out, like was discussed. Every day they showed up at 9:30 and left at 3:30 with a lunch break, never put in a full days work. The clean up was poor. We had our ceiling painted black (a whole other story), and after sanding, my husband had to go through and clean EVERY board and duct work to clear the white dust from the sanding of the drywall, One wall was completely covered in dust and all walls had to be cleaned before painting, although Doug said he would leave it “paint ready”. There was drywall mud was on the floor and top of the drywall. Doug knew we were having flooring installed the following week, so the floor should have been cleaned of debris, not just swept. I am very happy with the framing and drywall, but UNHAPPY with the “finish”. I felt like I was filling a void in their work schedule so they were readily available to start the job, and the when more work came in, I took a back seat. The last day they rushed through and were gone by noon, when some of my extras could have been fit and more attention to detail could have been given. My husband has some repairs to do as a result of their haste. Also I had to pay additional for materials because of poor estimating."

"Brett has done two projects for me and has two projects in the works. First he installed board and batten wainscoting in my dining room totally transforming the room. Second he opened up my basement stairs taking down the wall and installing a half wall, finishing the top step to match the flooring and adding a new railing to replace the builder grade railing. He is extremely professional, takes copious notes and is a master carpenter. I love working with him. He is patient with all my crazy design ideas and changes and is a true pleasure to work with. I will keep hiring Brett until there is nothing left to change in my house. He has even worked for my neighbors who hired him after they saw the work he did in my house. He is highly recommended."

"So happy we chose R&D for our exterior wall repairs! they were great to work with throughout the process of what turned out to be a complicated issue. Their communication was really appreciated as they dug into things and problem solved some unique issues with how the previous home owners had cut corners on the house. R&D wasn’t the cheapest initial bid we received but I have no doubt that we would have wound up paying more in the end for a lower quality result with anyone else. Thanks guys!"

"We had help with the design and the quality of workmanship was outstanding. A young member of their staff, Brian, did most of the work. His work ethic was unequaled. We couldn't be happier with the final result."

"Joe and his son transformed my kitchen into a dream come true, given what they had to work with I didn't think this would be possible. Joe pays very close attention to details giving me ideas I didn't even think of. He also accommodated all my add ons and with the spectacular work he does you can't help but to keep adding things on. His price is very reasonable and affordable. They are very efficient and leave your home clean and neat when they are done. I have more projects coming up and you best believe it will be Joe and his son on the job. I would recommend them for all renovation needs. They are truly the BEST!!!"

Basement Remodel questions, answered by experts

You technically can paint wires in a basement ceiling, but there are several important safety and code considerations. It's safe to paint non-metallic sheathed cable as long as the labeling remains visible. You can also paint low-voltage wires and conduit and junction boxes to help them blend into your basement.

However, you should not paint damaged or deteriorated wiring is a fire hazard because it poses a fire hazard. The same goes for painting over high-heat wires that connect to heat-generating appliances or systems. Be sure to avoid painting multiple coats onto any wires, as that traps heat and poses fire risks.

A finished basement must have a heat and electrical supply with an entrance that meets building code requirements, such as a stairwell to the home's main living space. It often must include finished walls, ceilings, and floors. If the finished basement includes a bedroom, it should have a heat source, an egress window, and a closet.

Remodeling, as opposed to finishing, means altering an already finished basement by adding a bathroom, bedroom, or living area.

Whether it’s more affordable to gut a house than build a new one depends on the markets where you'd be buying and selling. However, it’s usually less expensive to renovate a home than to build new construction.

Most homeowners pay between $100,000 and $200,000 for demolition and remodeling costs, whereas the average cost to build a new home is between $139,000 and $531,300.

Envision the type of bar experience you'd like to create for your guests. For example:

  • Does your basement have enough finished space for bar stools or seating?

  • What type of additional lighting would set the tone for the room?

  • Are there basement windows or an HVAC system?

  • Do you need new plumbing in your basement for a proper wet bar?

  • Could you be happy with a built-in wall cabinet bar rather than a full-scale wet bar?

If you’re not sure which method of raising the ceiling is best for you, here are a couple of considerations to help you make that decision. A professional ceiling company will be able to help you determine the best option for your home.

  • How long you are planning to live there: although raising the basement ceiling will increase the value of your home, if you’re planning to sell the house, then go for raising the house.

  • The condition of the foundation: to lower the floors, your foundation has to be intact whereas raising the house will allow you to restore the damaged foundation.
