HVAC systems last around 10 to 30 years. If you complete the recommended maintenance, you can expect your system to reach its maximum life span. The life span also depends on the type of HVAC system. The best time to do this varies on the system. For heating-based systems, call in a technician sometime during the fall. For air conditioners, go for the spring. Basically, schedule the service call before you plan on amping up HVAC system usage for the season. 

There are many recognizable symptoms of AC compressor failure. They include loud banging noises, hot air being continually circulated in your home despite running the AC at full blast, uneven airflow and cooling, and electrical issues like constant surges due to the compressor working overtime. While some of these symptoms, like uneven cooling, can have other root causes, they are common indicators of compressor problems.

Diagnose whether your HVAC damper is bad by assessing airflow. For a manual damper, close it and run your system. Air should stop flowing through the associated vents. If you feel air, it’s likely a bad damper that requires repair or replacement. Automatic dampers should maintain your desired room temperature. If not, they may be faulty, and you may need to invest in some HVAC repair costs.

Don’t run your AC with a wet filter. It can cause your AC to work too hard, which will run up your utility bill and cause extra wear and tear on the system. You could also spread moisture and mold throughout your house. Turn off the AC, remove the wet filter, and check for cracks or clogs. Fix the problem (with a pro’s help, if you need it), and put a dry filter in place before you turn the system back on.
