"Amanda was really very good!  At first I was very skeptical, thinking why did I pay money to just speak with someone on the phone about my kitchen remodel project... but after just a few minutes of her addressing some of the issues/questions I emailed to her earlier, I knew it was worth it.  It was very clear that she knew her business and she gave me several ideas that I had not even thought about.  I told her that I would definitely recommend her to friends and I will very likely use her again myself for my next home project!

"Hire this company to fix my metal roof and metal chimney that was damaged when a tree fell on my house. Seth and crew came out for review of job and gave a good description of what needed to be done. When they came to do the actual work the ran into several problems. Seth took me through the issues they ran into and they work their best to finish the work without trying to just make the job easy for them. Seth had my money in mind when trying to fix the issue. Very pleased with results and would hire them again."

"My apologies to Jacent Storie for the lateness of this review. We hired Storie Construction last fall to do our annual pre-winter check on our roof, and to do any repairs he thought necessary. He was on time, very accommodating and took care of a couple items not included in our agreement at no extra charge. Jacent takes the time to explain what's needed, what he did and why. We would hire him again and recommend him as a general contractor."

"Justin, Scott, June and all the crew did a great job finishing the job (with huge challenges) start to finish! I was a very nervous client because of the aspects of an emerging site situation and I would not hesitate to recommend Kuhn's Construction to people needing a hard-working contractor on a tight timeline."

Basement Remodel questions, answered by experts

Yes, most general contractors require an initial down payment, typically between 10% and 25% of the total project cost. This upfront payment helps cover the costs of materials, permits, and subcontractors. The remaining project costs are usually billed after specific project milestones are reached or on set completion dates, as outlined in your contract. Be wary of contractors who require a significant deposit of 50% or more upfront, as this could be a red flag for a scam.

Whether it’s more affordable to gut a house than build a new one depends on the markets where you'd be buying and selling. However, it’s usually less expensive to renovate a home than to build new construction.

Most homeowners pay between $100,000 and $200,000 for demolition and remodeling costs, whereas the average cost to build a new home is between $139,000 and $531,300.

The difficulty of adding a basement to an existing house can vary depending on the house’s location, the size of the basement, and the type and condition of the existing foundation. Adding a basement is a job best handled by the pros, so you’ll need to enlist professional help for this project.

In addition to overseeing new home builds, construction managers work on large renovations and major remodels. For example, they may work with designers and oversee the construction of a finished basement, kitchen renovation, or a home addition. They may also oversee large-scale remodels, such as the update of a historic home. Construction managers step into small projects for more specific assistance, such as building budgets and compiling the team.

Although homeowners often use the terms basement remodeling and basement finishing interchangeably, they are quite different terms.

Finishing a basement is the process of taking a basement space that is not habitable and adding elements to make it usable. This includes adding plumbing, flooring, and insulation.

Remodeling a basement means taking an already existing finished basement and changing it, often by adding or removing walls, adding plumbing, or changing the existing flooring.
