"I had called everyone that might help me fix my dishwasher...pumped the septic, snaked the main sewer line, called appliance repair, replaced the heating element, verified that the drain hose went from high to low; my dishwasher was still back flowing scrud onto my clean dishes at random times. Signed up with Neli, and had the answer to my problem in 15 minutes. James F gave me the part number for replacement and wa-laa, I’m waiting for it to come in the mail. I am very impressed and will use this service again as needed."

"I had a leak under my sink with water pouring out. Also a leaky washer and warm but not hot water in two showers. I called Mark and he was incredibly responsive, set up a time at my convenience. He is a very young guy, but incredibly knowledgeable. You gotta love that Scottish brogue!! My kitchen sink is a great example of what to expect from him, it was simply a hose that needed tightening. He showed me the problem, including how to fix it myself in the future and fixed it in about 2 minutes. With the washer, he told me it was an issue for the manufacturer, which I appreciated. He was able to quickly turn my warm shower into a hot one. I appreciate his honesty and expertise, he was great. He is the one I will call if I need a plumber again."

"When I realized it was time for a new kitchen, I first visited a high end shop in Manhattan to get their recommendations and drew up a list of items, with costs, including all top of the line materials and appliances, along with their labor and design fees. This gave me a useful benchmark for further research with different installers and appliances.
Next I canvassed the people in my 220 apartment coop to find recommendations. This process landed five contractor leads. I interviewed each of those contractors, including Tom from Paragon Installers. After the interviews were complete, it was obvious that Tom had the most compelling offer for a four key reasons. First, in accordance with the report from my neighbor, Tom comes across as trustworthy and attentive - he listens to what you want. I did not get this feeling consistently from the others I interviewed.
Second, Tom clearly knew his business inside and out and instead of giving me estimates like, "Maybe four maybe six weeks, it depends, we'll play it by ear," (which is how the other contractors sounded) Tom was very clear: we can do this in three and a half weeks. I asked him, how can you give me such a definitive timeline, when the other contractors had been so wishy washy? He said, I've done a lot of kitchens, of all types, in many environments, including in buildings like yours, so I know what to expect. Tom said, I get these jobs done faster than others because we know what we're doing, and because it works out best for everyone: you get your work done faster, and my team is able to move on to the next job sooner.  From that statement I got the impression was that Tom is an excellent businessman. None of the other contractors were that clear about the business angle.
Third, Tom works closely with Cab Art, a design firm that provides digital mockups of your kitchen that they work with you to shape to your needs. So I was able to see my kitchen, in perspective renderings, and make changes, etc., before any work was done or any materials were ordered.
Fourth, and most important, Tom's price was better than all of the other contractors, and when I combined that with choosing not the very highest-end stove, and high quality but not top-end cabinetry, I was able to do the entire project at one-half the cost of the high end Manhattan store.
So what happened?
The kitchen was done exactly to the renderings, and completed on time and at the projected cost, exactly to the timeframe that Tom proposed the first time he walked into my apartment. I will admit that I helped the process along a bit by being personally available to deal with the inevitable questions and quirks during the process, and also making sure appliances we delivered well before they were needed. I also visited the granite grinding yard where I purchased the countertop and brought two bags of empanadas to the team there - which meant they turned around my countertop in one day instead of five.  But most importantly, Tom's team was on site every day, making progress, knew how to deal with everything we threw at them, and the entire job was completed on time.
At this point I could not be happier with the results. Every time I walk into my apartment I see that kitchen and I feel good about it. I cook nearly every day, so I'm getting my money's worth out of the investment as well.
My background as a financial business analyst and project manager means that I know something about how complicated projects  need to be managed in order to be successful, and all I can say is that Paragon Installers knows their business and executed the plan flawlessly."

Dishwasher Installation questions, answered by experts

Most dishwashers are designed with a standardized width of around 24 inches and can fit into most kitchen spaces intended for dishwashers. However, the height and depth might vary slightly, requiring careful measurements to ensure a proper fit. Certain specialized or compact dishwasher models might deviate from the standard size to accommodate specific needs or non-standard spaces. While many dishwashers adhere to a typical size, measuring the available space accurately is crucial to guarantee a seamless installation.

The only way to repair a dishwasher door hinge is to replace the broken or damaged hinge. To do this, you'll want to remove the old hinge, install a new one that fits your specific dishwasher model, and reattach the panel.

To clean an old dishwasher without a filter, start by removing the bottom rack to access the drain area. Use a damp cloth or sponge to wipe down the interior, paying special attention to the corners and crevices where food particles and debris can build up. Pour a cup of white vinegar into a dishwasher-safe bowl and place it on the top rack, then run a hot water cycle to help break down grease and grime. After the cycle, sprinkle a cup of baking soda across the bottom of the dishwasher and run a short hot water cycle to deodorize and further clean the interior.

When deciding whether to repair or replace your dishwasher, consider its age, the repair cost, and its warranty status. It is often worth repairing a dishwasher if it is only a few years old, the problem is minor, or the appliance is still under warranty. A common guideline is the 50% rule: if the repair cost is less than 50% of the price of a new unit, a repair is generally recommended. However, if the dishwasher is more than 10 years old or requires frequent repairs, replacement is likely the more cost-effective choice to avoid future issues. For context, a new dishwasher costs between $1,000 and $1,500 on average, while typical repairs cost several hundred dollars. Simple fixes like a damaged gasket or clogged filter can be inexpensive, but major repairs like a new pump or motor can be costly.

You should avoid using a pressure washer on any surface or item that could be damaged by the high-pressure spray, as some materials are too delicate to withstand the force.

Key items and surfaces to avoid include:

  • Electrical Components: Never pressure wash electrical systems, as water can cause short-circuits and create a safety hazard. This includes utility meters, breaker boxes, electrical outlets, generators, and HVAC or air conditioner units.

  • Delicate and Fragile Materials: Fragile items can crack, shatter, or be stripped by the pressure. Avoid pressure washing windows, glass, light fixtures, shingled roofs (especially asphalt), and stucco.

  • Painted, Stained, or Sealed Surfaces: Unless your goal is to strip the finish, do not pressure wash painted surfaces, stained wood (like decks), or anything with a protective seal that could be stripped away. Be especially cautious with older surfaces that may contain lead paint.

  • Soft Woods and Certain Decking: Delicate surfaces like softwood, composite decking, and antique or wooden patio furniture can be etched or damaged. If you must wash wood, use a lower-powered pressure washer with a wide-angle nozzle to prevent damage.

  • Living Things: Never use a pressure washer on people, pets, or plants. The force can cause serious injury and will destroy landscaping.
