"I added a room on to the back of my house. It require some new gutter installation plus some modified and reworked install. George came recommended from a neighbor. He answered my call promptly and drove over to my property to meet me and discuss solutions. Once we worked out a plan that he suggested he went back to his truck and wrote up a quote for service. He gave me a reasonable time range and called the day before to see if the day worked for me. Bright and early this morning he was at my house to start the project. He took down existing gutters to create room for the new gutters that would make the water flow from the other direction. He added four downspouts in strategic locations to complete this awesome professional project. He cleaned all the soffits prior to added on the new gutters. What a difference. It just poured outside so a stood on my deck and watched the water flow exactly as we discussed. Couldn't be happier, I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND this skilled installer to anyone who is in need of gutter work or repair. His pricing was very reasonable. Poor gutter drainage can cause sagging gutters, roof damage, mold, mildew, rot, basement flooding, and foundation cracks. With gutter replacement costs possible for just $500, getting the right system can save you thousands in repairs down the road.

If you want to replace your home's existing underground downspout, you have options. One is to connect a rain barrel to the downspout. During a storm, water travels from the downspout into the barrel. You can then use the water to irrigate your garden or lawn. 

Another option is to install a downspout extension above ground. The extension will direct water away from your home, but potentially not as far away as an underground system.

You can remove your gutters before painting, but it's rarely required. It can be easier to paint gutters on the ground once you or a pro have removed them, but replacing them afterward can be challenging. In these cases, removing gutters may be impractical. Make your decision based on your comfort level and abilities.

A full gutter system, or even a full gutter replacement , costs homeowners an average of around $1,200 . This is a very rough number based on the average-sized home with a typical roof build, using vinyl gutters. This average also assumes the roof is in good condition, as you can’t hang new gutters on a rotting or sloping roof. Factors that increase cost are metal gutters, larger homes, and unique gutter styles.

If you’re not interested in digging up your yard, but you still need to direct water away from your house, another option is to extend your downspouts further out into the yard. Two methods to do this are:

  • Adding a splashguard. This is the simplest method. You can purchase a splashguard at your local hardware store and place it under your downspout. This will act as a funnel to direct water away from your house.

  • Add downspout extension at the end. You can also add an additional downspout to the end of the “elbow” as a way to extend the water further out into your yard. Some hardware stores sell downspouts with a flexible extension that you can maneuver around your yard.

The above alternatives are great options if your gutters are above a slab foundation that you wouldn’t want to dig up. One downside to these methods is if your yard slopes back upwards to your home, then the water won’t actually flow away. In which case, burying your downspouts if the best option to avoid flooding and water damage to your home.
