"Joe Woods and Just Right Carpentry did a superb job building our new deck. They were responsive, kind, and easy to work with. In addition to building a beautiful deck at a reasonable price, they left everything neat and clean after they left. They went above and beyond and I will certainly use their services again."

"John and his team did an excellent job on our deck! We had our old deck torn down and a Trex composite deck built on the existing frame. The deck is seamless and perfect and 100% better than our old deck! John and his team had it built in 2 days and their price was more than reasonable. Some other companies out there quoted me OVER double (The Deck Guy, Decks Unique, etc.) The owners of these OTHER companies pride themselves on 30+ years in business but when you ask them if they will personally be building your deck or even on site for the build, they canâ t give you a straight answer because theyâ re so â busy.â Skip over those other companies and hire John and his team because he will personally be working on your deck and overseeing everything his team does as well! I honestly couldnâ t be happier and I am recommending him to all my friends and family!"

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

The cost to convert a carport into a garage averages about $22,000, ranging from about $15,000 and $55,000. Additional cost factors to consider include size, time of year, and how much of the carport you can reuse. Other cost factors include the kinds and amounts of materials used, such as:

  • Add insulation: $1 per square foot

  • Add drywall: $1–$3 per square foot

  • Add window: $450–$2,000 per window

  • Add outlets: $75–$500

  • Add garage door: $250–$11,200

  • Enclose framing: $5–$13 per square foot

  • Replace roofing: $1,000–$2,000

Not all porch columns are load-bearing, though they can be. Some porch columns are simply decorative. There are ways to identify a load-bearing column, like looking for visible seams and a foundation. Also, check to see if the column directly enters the ground. In some porch installations, a contractor will excavate a hole to install a column into the earth along with a buried cement base for stability.

Homeowners can increase the usefulness of their garage space in other ways, and one option is to extend the length of the garage by making it deeper. The process is similar to traditional garage extensions, but the end product is a garage with a different layout rather than additional parking spaces.

Bump-out additions can add some space to a closet without requiring any significant structural work. This entails pushing back the existing rear or side of the closet, simply moving the wall into either an adjacent room or unused space. For ground-floor closets, this could even be extended to the exterior of the home, but that has its own complications. Bump-outs are a good discussion to have with your contractor if you’re just looking to increase the space a little—not renovate the entire closet space.

It’s sometimes safe to replace a load-bearing wall with a beam, but you need a structural engineer to sign off on the project. You’ll also likely have to upgrade to a steel I-beam or another material that’s stronger than wood to maintain the level of support you need without the wall underneath.
