Even if you’re an advanced DIYer, repairing a sliding glass door yourself is not a good idea. This project requires precise measurements and work to ensure the door aligns properly within the space and frame, otherwise, you’ll have an uneven door on your hands. Longer screws can make a door more secure, but this isn’t a foolproof method for security. Replacing the short screws in your door’s strike plate with screws that are 3 inches long will make it much more difficult for an intruder to force entry by kicking down the door, but it won’t do anything to stop them from picking the lock. 

Regularly check hinges, lubricate locks, and inspect weatherstripping for signs of wear.

You will need to cut or break a boomstick so it is wider than the door and long enough to anchor outside the door frame. Extend the broomstick horizontally under the doorknob, ensuring it's snug. Now using long screws and a drill, anchor the broomstick to the wall outside the door frame. Remember that you won't be able to open the door afterward. Do not proceed with this hack if your home has no alternative exit.

Whether you should fix or replace a door depends on the extent of the damage and whether your home’s security is compromised. For large areas of damage, significant damage near the door’s hardware, or damage that doesn’t allow the door to close or lock properly, the cost of replacing the door is a better investment than trying to repair it.
