"I am very pleased with the service and equipment. Patrick was prompt, did the work quickly and cleaned up afterward. His price was very reasonable and he has called to check on the system and make sure I am satisfied. I know he will be there right away if I have any problems. I had no experience with choosing a system for an older house in Santa Fe. There is no ductwork. It was heated with a wood stove. The mini split system has given me three zones in the house where I can control the heat or cooling separately. This is perfect for me because I don't have to heat or cool areas that I am not using."

"The first day on 6/08/15 Rick showed up to see what was to be done, however he realized that he didn't have the materials to do the job. He searched a few places but couldn't find the spindles.  He then called me and asked if it would be alright to just replace the fawcet and put on new spindles, I approved it. He then returned in a couple of days and did an excellent job. The company was very fair charging me only the parts the second time since he didn't really do much the first time, the first time he was in and out in about 15 minutes.

"Did not go with them. This company's equipment is 100% self-installed. It would have been nice to know before spending 15 minutes talking to sales rep on the other side of the country. I am not installing cameras on the top floor of my house!"

Heating Oil FAQs, answered by experts

The primary differences between a heat pump and a boiler are their function and how they produce heat. A heat pump is a versatile system that provides both heating and cooling by moving ambient air and altering its temperature. In contrast, a boiler is solely a heating system, often working with a furnace or AC unit as part of a larger HVAC system. In terms of heat production, a heat pump generates heat more slowly and at a lower temperature, requiring a large convector for distribution. A boiler, however, produces a large amount of high-temperature heat that it emits through smaller radiators.

Boiler installations and replacements cost between $3,600 to $8,400. Expect to pay around $5,900 on average for a new boiler, including installation. Adding new radiators or heaters to the boiler may include separate costs if you are also upgrading those components, so the final price may be higher. To decrease costs, you can look for local energy rebates for using a boiler and wait until installers are offering discounts for a first-time installation.

If you want to have hot water in your home and part of your plumbing system, you'll need a hot water heater. An alternative may be to heat water as you use it, such as by boiling what you need on the stove. But that's much less efficient and takes considerably longer than hooking up a water heater. Another option is to rely on appliances, such as a dishwasher or washing machine, that heat the water themselves.

Warmed or cooled air can escape your home through drafty windows and doors. If you notice any gaps, be sure to caulk and seal them. You can also hire a local pro for an energy audit to get a list of energy-saving recommendations.

Finally, check your insulation. It can settle in over time and become less effective. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that you can save an average of 15% on heating and cooling costs (or 11% of total energy costs) by sealing leaks and making sure attics, crawl spaces, and basements have a nice layer of insulation.

Unless they are connected to the same system, boilers and water heaters will both need their own expansion tanks. The only case they wouldn’t have separate expansion tanks is if the boiler is pulling double duty and managing a heating system while also supplying hot water for a home. In which case, you may not need a hot water heater.
