"The service provided by D&R was excellent.  They quickly came out to the work site to provide an estimate after we first made contact and were able to beat all other bids.  They did an excellent job with all work; the building being remodeled is from 1914, and they were able to do a great job of blending contemporary materials in a way that matches the very old building.  Also, all work was finished a week ahead of schedule.   "

"The tile contractor did a great job with both bathrooms.  David, owner, went through the process with you including doing the design and meeting him to order the tiles.  David also allowed me to purchase some of the items (lights, faucets, and shower heads) that I knew I could get a great deal on Amazon and did not have the profit markup.  I also purchased two commodes from COSTCO that also saved me dollars.  There was some delays with tiles but the wait was worth it.  There was also a mixed up with the shower window contractor but we changed to another shower glass contractor.  There were also some unforeseen issues (with all remodeling) but it was handled in a professional manner and a reasonable price.  David was very professional and great to work with.  We are extremely pleased with our two bathrooms.

Basement Remodel questions, answered by experts

When considering finishing your basement, take into account a few pros and cons:

Pros

  • Can increase the value of your home

  • Separate space from the rest of the house

  • Customize and personalize the basement to suit your needs and style

  • Increase the amount of living space in your home

Cons

  • May not regain enough value to cover the cost of finishing

  • Lack of natural light if it’s below ground level

  • Moisture or flooding can cause costly damage

  • Installing plumbing and electrical can be messy and costly

If you have the woodworking experience to build a bar from scratch and you have the time, DIYing the work is a no-brainer and can save a few thousand dollars. However, if you’re looking to include a sink, additional lighting fixtures, or high-end bar tops and cabinets, it’s usually a better idea to call in a pro. It will cost more, but the finished product will likely be worth it.

A walkout basement is considered to be partially below grade because at least one wall is entirely exposed. In some cases and in specific municipalities, inspectors and appraisers will still count walkout basements as below grade, which means the space can’t serve as living space or be rented out. If you intend on using the area as living space or a separate apartment, you should check with your local building department to make sure it’s legal to do so.

Home improvements that increase value offer a high return on investment (ROI) and can enhance your quality of life. Upgrades to your home’s curb appeal often add the most value, with garage door replacement having one of the best ROIs at 93%. Other high-value exterior projects include replacing your front door, upgrading siding and roofing, installing a stone veneer, adding new windows, and landscaping. For interior renovations, a fresh coat of paint provides an excellent ROI. Major projects like a kitchen remodel or upgrading appliances and HVAC systems also add significant value, as potential buyers appreciate the peace of mind that new equipment provides.

The average cost of remodeling a basement is $30 to $75 per square foot. If your space is unfinished and looks like it may need more help, use the higher number when calculating your estimated basement remodeling costs. A good rule of thumb is to add an additional 20% to the top of your estimate to cover any “what if” situations.
