"Prior to these guys saving our property, we foolishly hired an under-qualified contractor to install a large patio and retaining wall system. It turned out to be a never ending nightmare from the start that left us with pooling water everywhere, mud leaking thru walls and stairs that were falling apart. We hired Classical Pavers to hopefully resolve all our issues, and boy did they deliver. These guys are true landscape engineers! They uprooted the previously installed pavers, flawlessly re-pitched and graded the base, planned for all the possible drainige issues that might come up, and completely cleaned the pavers and property of any remnants of their work. I could not be happier with the professionalism of every level of their services. I would absolutely recommend them, and only use them for any and all future projects."

First, reseal your driveway every one to three years to protect it from the elements. You can also use sand instead of salt when de-icing your driveway (since salt is corrosive) and clean your driveway annually using a pressure washer to keep it in tip-top shape.

Maintaining a driveway depends on its material. For concrete and asphalt, it's best to clean the surface thoroughly twice a year with a stiff broom and a pressure washer to remove accumulated dirt and debris. Sealing the driveway is crucial to protect it from water damage and freeze-thaw cycles. Before applying a sealant, pressure wash the surface to remove any loose sealant, dirt, or stains, as sealing over them will trap them. Three inches is a great thickness for a residential asphalt driveway that sees minimal to moderate traffic from cars, SUVs, and pickup trucks. However, a thicker driveway can better withstand the weight of a heavier vehicle, such as a trailer or a recreational vehicle. If you drive a heavy vehicle on a thin driveway, you risk cracking and damaging it.

If you're designing a new patio in an area with poor drainage, permeable pavers made from porous materials may help prevent water issues. Most permeable pavers feature a gravel-only aggregate base instead of a concrete base to allow water to flow through instead of getting trapped. While beneficial in some cases, permeable pavers come with higher initial costs and greater load-bearing limitations compared to traditional pavers.

You’ll first need to install a base underneath your pavers for extra stability and drainage. Otherwise, the pavers can sink into the ground, and you’ll have to reinstall them. Use a base gravel layer of 4 to 6 inches for walkways and 10 to 12 inches for driveways. Compact your gravel layer every 2 to 4 inches so it’s nice and solid. After you install your gravel base, apply a 1-inch layer of sand on top.
