"This job could not have gone any better! After requesting a few quotes via Angie's list, Richard got back to me within 24 hours to inquire about the job. Turns out he was doing a few driveways in my development the next day and said he would stop by and have a look at my driveway. After a brief chat about options for the driveway, he gave me the price (very reasonable) and said he would be back later in the morning to perform the work. Richard and his team showed up as scheduled, sealed the driveway (looks awesome) and they were on their way! This may have been the most economical, highest quality, lowest stress work I have ever had on our house! Highest rating for all aspects of the service for sure."

"From start to finish Garden State Paving were great to work with. They were the most responsive of all the contractors I contacted with the friendliest customer service, reasonable prices, and prompt & professional work. I would recommend them to anyone in the area needing a paving job and would hire them again if needed."

"Went well once Classical Pavers arrived to do the job. Very busy Company and do work at times some distance from their base for existing clients. Stairs were removed before they arrived so initially the base under the stairs wasn't wide enough. Thiago and his crew came back to make it right the day after Thanksgiving and even widened the patio another row of pavers as an extra to make up for wait. Totally satisfied."

"Did a big job of redoing our pool and patio area pavers. I received estimates from 6 paving places, but I felt the most comfortable with Roni as his insight and expertise was evident by the comments and questions he asked. His pricing was surprisingly fair probably because they know how to do the work well with little waste in time and materials. I found him on Thumbtack of all places, and I’m so glad I did! The whole team was so friendly and professional, we look forward to the next project with them. Thank you, Roni! I’m sending you everyone I know!! See the results!"

Paving Services questions, answered by experts

The most common causes of sunken pavers are poor base preparation and insufficient compaction. The problem could also be how your pavers were installed. If the soil beneath your patio or walkway wasn't compacted, it will pull pavers down as it settles. Additionally, using bare soil instead of making a paver bed with compacted gravel and sand can cause sinking over time. To fix sunken pavers, consider recompacting the base and addressing any drainage or erosion issues in the area.

You should place a layer of thick landscaping fabric directly over the concrete slab and then a thin layer of leveling sand over that to protect the pavers from moisture. For border pavers, you should plan on locking them in place with polyurethane adhesive. This will prevent them from shifting under foot traffic.

You can expect your asphalt pavement to last anywhere from 20 to 30 years, or 25 years on average. The life expectancy of your asphalt driveway depends on the climate, the amount of traffic, and how well you maintain it. While you can’t necessarily control some of these factors, you can control the amount of maintenance effort you put into your driveway.

To prevent your asphalt from deteriorating prematurely, you should follow a good maintenance routine involving regular cleaning, reparation work, and resealing.

In most cases, you don’t need a permit to repave your driveway, although some exceptions exist. If you’re widening your driveway and plan on widening the apron as well, you’ll usually need a permit from the Department of Transportation in your area. This permit costs between $50 and $300 in most cases. Most municipalities will also require a certified and insured contractor do the work relating to the apron and curb cut. You can contact your building department or ask your paving company if you need a permit. Your driveway professional will usually pull the permit for you.

You can pour concrete over asphalt if it’s in good condition, thick, stable, and well-compacted. Concrete is more durable than asphalt and can extend the lifetime of your driveway without having to pay frequent asphalt driveway repair costs or replace it completely.

But this is best reserved as a temporary solution based on budget restraints, as asphalt requires more frequent repairs and assessments than concrete. Once that concrete top is poured, it’ll be harder to accurately understand what’s happening beneath that layer, which could lead to more issues.
