After performing the work, they discussed the condition of the fireplace and future conditions to keep an eye on as the unit continues to be used. "Ylber (Jimmy) and his nephew who came to work were both very professional, courteous and honest. I had called them since I had noticed couple of shingles coming off the roof. Jimmy advised that roof needed some repairs as the rubber coverings around the flashings were completely worn out and there were quite a few shingles missing. Also recommended painting the chimney covering rather than replacing the entire cover due to rust which would cost lot of money. Very please with the work and would definitely recommended them to others."

"We were hoping to upgrade our fireplace to gas only and upgrade the look but knew we needed a chimney inspection and sweep first. We had another company come out and they quoted us an astronomical price in order to get the chimney in working condition and said they could not even do a sweep unless we did the work that was quoted. We found Select Masonry Construction LLC on Angi Leads. Called that morning and asked a few questions and was able to make an appointment for that afternoon. Gary and his brother  came and went over what needed to be done to get the chimney in working order and was also able to provide a catalogue so we could pick out finishing pieces. Gary was extremely honest and straightforward and prices were very reasonable. It took a week to get the items in stock and installed. We were shocked at how clean and expeditiously the work (including chimney sweep) was performed. The final product is amazing! We will certainly be recommending Select Masonry Construction to our friends. Thank you!"

Fireplaces questions, answered by experts

In most homes, your chimney and HVAC are separate from each other. However, you can use your chimney to save on heating costs in the winter. Turn off your HVAC system and start a cozy fire, then watch the electric bills drop during the coldest months. Make sure your flue is closed when not in use so that you don’t end up pumping heat or cool air from your system outside.

Compared to certain types of firewood like pine or spruce—which burn off sticky resin contained within the wood that creates lots of smoke—elm isn’t the worst option for burning in a fireplace.

Because elm wood is dense, it burns at a moderate pace and does a pretty good job of keeping your home warm. Hardwood like maple or oak may perform slightly better, but elm isn’t a bad choice overall.

The best time to clean your chimney is before you need to use it, which for most people is during the spring, summer, or early fall. Spring and summer are often ideal because the chimney is not in use, and chimney sweeps can access the roof more easily without snow and ice. The warmer months are also better for making any necessary repairs. To avoid the rush when chimney sweeps get booked up in early spring and late fall, scheduling your cleaning for the summer can be a safe bet. It's recommended to book your annual chimney sweep during these warmer months to maintain a yearly schedule.

Yes, capped chimneys should still be vented. Failing to vent a chimney will result in condensation buildup inside the chimney, which commonly results in mold growth. If mold begins to grow in a chimney, it frequently goes undetected and spreads quickly through the home. Mold and moisture can damage the structural integrity of your home, and exposure to mold can cause discomfort and illness in residents.

Yes, a pellet stove can heat an entire house—as long as you choose one that’s large enough for that purpose. For context, pellet stoves generate between 8,000 and 90,000 British Thermal Units (BTUs), and you’ll need 30 to 60 BTUs per square foot, depending on your climate zone. If you’re unsure which size pellet stove to buy, reach out to a local pellet or wood stove repair company.
