"They were amazing! Our roof is extremely high and steeply pitched, but they thoroughly and safely cleaned everything. Our roof looks brand new now, and I'm sure this will extend the life of our roof for many years. They even helped us with some outside spotlights that we can't reach. They were great to work with, and I'd highly recommend them to anyone looking for power washing."

"We hired Steel Penn to build a new deck off the kitchen of our home. From the very beginning they were in contact with us every step of the way. Amber and Fred answered all of my many questions and helped us feel at ease through the entire project. The workers were always there on time, cleaned up and the deck came out great! We also had our sliding doors replaced. The workers noticed a problem with them before they even opened up the package. We had them replaced and once we received the new set they came right out to replace them. I can't say enough great things about Steel Penn and would recommend them to everyone!"

Deck Cleaning questions, answered by experts

If you have wood decking, there are several common deck problems that you might encounter. For example, your natural wood boards may fade over time due to things like sunlight, weather, and debris. On top of that, some types of wood decking can rot, grow mold, and attract destructive pests—including termites, carpenter ants, and woodpeckers.

When installing deck boards, screws are generally a better option than nails. Screws offer superior holding strength over time, keeping the boards securely in place. In contrast, nails are more likely to pop out, which can create a tripping hazard. While you can use either, we recommend using 3-inch galvanized deck screws. To minimize the risk of cracking the wood, it's a good practice to drill small pilot holes before driving the screws into the deck joists.

Yes, transforming a deck into a sunroom is an absolute possibility. Building a sunroom involves framing in the deck area with walls, adding windows, and affixing a roof. This project is not an easy task, but it does provide a stylish addition to your house. Not all deck designs support this type of renovation project, so consult a professional deck builder before beginning.

No, termites do not eat Trex or any other composite decking brand. Termites eat cellulose, of which composite decking like Trex contains very little compared to natural wood. This feature can help justify the higher Trex decking costs if you live in an area with abundant termites.

Spindles on a deck may also be called balusters or pickets. While not as important to the structural support of the deck as the rail posts, they play a critical role in ensuring the deck is safe to use by closing in large gaps in the railing. For this reason, balusters must be no more than 4 inches away from one another.
