Our architecture and historic preservation practice is based in Haddon Heights, New Jersey, a suburb of Philadelphia. We have over 25 years of experience providing historic preservation and architecture consulting services to owners of historic properties. Being a small firm, the majority of our projects involve small to medium sized buildings, including public and privately owned properties. We typically become involved in projects long before the typical architect starts working on design by assisting with planning and feasibility studies, documentation, budget evaluation, and grant funding applications. We specialize in providing the tools for planning for historic properties - Preservation Plans and Historic Structure Reports. Since both partners are Registered Architects, we provide focused consulting and design services. Our specialized experience allows us to tailor our services to the unique needs of each project, and to offer historic preservation consulting services as well as traditional architectural services.

Architects questions, answered by experts

An architect ensures compliance with building codes, maximizes space efficiency, enhances functionality, and integrates energy-efficient solutions. Their expertise can also improve workflow and customer experience.

Depending on what the blueprints are for, a qualified draftsperson, contractor, or architect can draw them up. In some cases, including specialty permitting for a build, you may be required to use a licensed architect.

In many cases, a blueprint drawn up by a certified professional is required before a city or municipality approves a permit.

Open floor plans can come with drawbacks—mainly the lack of privacy and noise dampening. Walls act as an important barrier for traveling sounds, meaning in an open floor plan you could hear your dishwasher running while sitting in your living room. Storage limitations and separation of activities (for example, keeping the kid’s playroom away from the dining room) are other reasons some homeowners are opting out of an open floor plan.

Federal and Colonial architecture are similar in that they both appear mostly utilitarian and symmetrical, but Federal architecture is a bit more ornate. Federal design often includes decorative palladium windows, window lintels, and, sometimes, columns surrounding a more decorative portico. Inside, Federal architecture is set apart by its centrally-located oval room. Additionally, Federal homes tend to have brick facades, whereas Colonial homes more often have wood siding.

Aging-in-place universal design features can make your home more comfortable for family members who are older or have disabilities; they can also make your home safer. In addition, adding a universal-design bathroom can boost your home’s overall resale value.
