"I live in Richmond, Staten Island, and my old concrete steps were in terrible condition. The corners were deteriorating badly, pieces were breaking away, and the whole thing was really starting to fall apart. I knew I needed to get it taken care of properly, so I called TriStone Masonry & Restoration. It turned out to be one of the best decisions I could have made. The guys removed the old deteriorated step and built me a completely brand-new step from scratch. The workmanship was excellent, everything was finished neatly, and the new step looks completely different from what was there before. The work was completed a couple of months ago and I haven’t had a single problem since. The step still looks great and feels solid and properly built. The whole team was professional, hardworking, and easy to deal with from beginning to end. I would definitely recommend TriStone Masonry & Restoration to anyone in Staten Island who needs masonry or step work done. Best guys around and I couldn"

"Prior to these guys saving our property, we foolishly hired an under-qualified contractor to install a large patio and retaining wall system. It turned out to be a never ending nightmare from the start that left us with pooling water everywhere, mud leaking thru walls and stairs that were falling apart. We hired Classical Pavers to hopefully resolve all our issues, and boy did they deliver. These guys are true landscape engineers! They uprooted the previously installed pavers, flawlessly re-pitched and graded the base, planned for all the possible drainige issues that might come up, and completely cleaned the pavers and property of any remnants of their work. I could not be happier with the professionalism of every level of their services. I would absolutely recommend them, and only use them for any and all future projects."

"We had two sets of loose brick steps that needed to be replaced. Their quotes were very reasonable and the finished work is fantastic. I highly recommend them for their very professional masonry work."

Masonry questions, answered by experts

Historic Long Branch homes built over a century ago feature soft, lime-based mortar and non-standard brick sizes that complicate matching materials. Properties near the shoreline face high water tables and sandy soils, making foundation excavation difficult. Elevated homes repaired after Hurricane Sandy feature mixed materials prone to shifting. Furthermore, narrow lot lines in downtown residential neighborhoods restrict equipment access, extending the timeline for staging materials and mixing mortar.

Helpful?

A proactive seasonal routine protects your property from severe NJ weather. Inspect brick faces and mortar joints for winter freeze damage in early March. Schedule local professionals in May before the summer renovation rush begins. Check chimney flashing and retaining walls in August to prepare for hurricane season. Finally, seal open joints and finish all masonry work by November, as mortar fails to cure properly when temperatures drop below freezing.

Helpful?

Scheduling masonry work in NJ coastal areas requires planning, as contractors face high demand from April through October. Small projects like tuckpointing take one to three days, while a full chimney rebuild requires one to two weeks. High summer humidity slows mortar curing times, adding extra days. You must also account for permit processing and mandatory municipal inspections, which extend the total timeline before your project is officially closed.

Helpful?

Safety during masonry work requires strict attention to local environmental hazards. Contractors must secure scaffolding against strong Long Branch ocean winds and halt work during coastal storm warnings. Professionals use wet cutting methods or specialized vacuums to control dangerous silica dust. For homes built before 1940, test old mortar for hazardous additives before starting demolition. Maintain clear pedestrian pathways around scaffolding if your property has narrow lot lines.

Helpful?

In Long Branch, coastal salt air accelerates wear on brick and mortar. Look for white salt deposits, flaking brick faces, or crumbling mortar joints. These signs indicate you need masonry work. Stair-step cracks in brick walls also point to foundation or masonry issues. Conversely, horizontal cracks in poured concrete or interior water stains near windows require a waterproofing specialist or window contractor instead of a mason.
