"Masonry by Tommy listened to our needs and offered ideas to make it better. He offers the best quality work. The workers are very professionals, polite, and neat. Their attention to detail and the appearance of their finished work is the best we have ever seen. In repointing old brick and laying concrete slabs, they matched the color of our 20-year-old masonry. I would highly recommend Tommy to everyone!"

"We used Build USA LLC as our contractor for the vinyl siding of our house and for our gutters also. Start by saying they gave a fair and reasonable price. The job came out beautiful. The Matt and the crew are nice and professional, answered all of our questions. Very accommodating, even after the job was completed. They worked thru heavy snow and strong winds could not ask for a more dedicated team. Good and reliable company, good service from everyone."

"From the same day estimate, to the scheduling in one week, to the completion everyone was a complete professional and gentleman. After talking with them is was obvious how honest and hard working they were. They actually touched up a couple if other (masonry) spots for me for no additional charge, to which I tipped them appreciatively. I highly recommend Gold Medal."

Masonry questions, answered by experts

A mason lays brick or stone together, sometimes with mortar in between the bricks and stones, and sometimes without mortar, also called a dry-stack or surface bonding. Examples of work masons do include:

  • Brick, stone, or cement block houses and buildings

  • Freestanding stone or brick walls

  • Chimneys with wood-burning fireplaces

  • Cement block basement or crawl space walls

Brick is the closest choice when seeking to capture the timeless look of stone with a more practical and budget-friendly option. When comparing stone versus brick siding, the price range of $200,000 to $400,000 for average brick home construction is dramatically lower compared to the cost of building a stone home. If you'd like to keep the stone aesthetic without the cost, stone veneer and manufactured stone are both less expensive than real stone.

Spalling brick is not uncommon, but it does indicate a serious issue. It can be caused by water damage, an intense freeze-thaw cycle, or something else. Painted bricks can be susceptible to spalling, as the paint doesn’t allow the porous material of the brick to breathe, which can trap moisture. Spalling should always be addressed immediately before more serious structural damage occurs.

No, you shouldn’t lay bricks directly on dirt. While it might seem like a shortcut, it leads to a patio that shifts, sinks, and becomes a maintenance headache. Dirt expands, contracts, and erodes—none of which mix well with long-term stability. To build something that lasts, excavate the topsoil, compact a layer of crushed gravel, and add a coarse sand-setting bed. This layered base gives your bricks proper support, allows drainage, and helps block weeds from creeping through. Cutting corners here just means you’ll spend more time—and money—repairing your brick patio later.

You can use normal bricks as cladding for a concrete or clay pizza oven or as a base underneath one. Fire bricks or solid clay bricks are necessary for an outdoor pizza oven’s floor, and you can use clay bricks for the rest of the oven.
