"Ken is very nice. Explains what's going on, the process and timelines. Had an issue with my charger (I purchased it myself, he just installed it); even though he didn't have to, he walked me through troubleshooting, turned out to be an issue with the programming on the charger itself. He was communicating with me even after my check cleared to make sure I could charge my car fully. Would hire again in a heartbeat."

"We live out of state and our 2nd home is almost completely shut down but we have been getting high bills like we were living there. Called Kim's on a Sunday and they went over there the next day and diagnosed the breaker box/breakers/wires were pulling electricity. They installed new box/breakers and some wiring. Asked and they sent pictures with their work. Since it just happened and we are not there to confirm everything, it is too early to tell if this fixed the problem but we are keeping our fingers crossed and Dave was very helpful. We thought the price was kind of high, but being across the country and not knowing an electrician we could trust it was decided to get this done anyway and not waste more time shopping quotes. Based on the pictures I received, they did everything they quoted and it looks good."

Generator Install questions, answered by experts

No, you should never plug a generator directly into a wall outlet in your house. This practice is extremely dangerous, often illegal, and can cause "back-feeding," where power from the generator flows back into utility lines, creating a life-threatening hazard for utility workers. It can also damage your home's electrical system, including appliances like pumps and HVAC fans. If the main power is restored while the generator is connected, it can destroy the generator and cause an electrical fire. To safely connect a generator, you must use a professionally installed transfer switch or an interlocking kit, which prevents back-feeding by disconnecting your home from the utility grid before the generator provides power.

To reduce AC startup power for a whole-house generator, install a soft start kit or hard start capacitor, which lowers the initial surge by gradually ramping up the compressor. Using a smart load manager can also help by staggering startup loads, preventing a system overload and future costly repairs.

DIY is possible for basic setups. Professional installation ensures safe and proper electrical connections.

To power a central air system during a power outage, the whole-house generator will need to be at least 5,000 watts, and this number will significantly increase for larger units. Check the specific wattage requirements of your AC unit to choose the right generator size. Consider consulting a generator installer to ensure your whole-house generator meets your electrical load needs.

If you’re deciding between a solar battery versus a generator for the best backup power solution, you can take a few factors into consideration. Solar batteries are quiet while generators can be quite loud. Generators have a lower up-front cost, but they require fuel and ongoing maintenance while solar batteries are more expensive but don’t have many ongoing costs.
