"We have a large center hall colonial with cedar shack shingles. They've been drying out for over 20 years in the hot sun. Joe came by to provide an estimate. We agreed on one oil base coat and two finish stain coats. The entire house was power washed before anything was applied. The price was very reasonable for the amount of work done. We couldn't have been happier with the crew and workmanship performed. Always courteous, always on time and cleaned up at the end of every day. All my phone calls to John or Joe were answered immediately and completely. I highly recommend John's Painting to anyone in need any painting services. "Not well. In general, the painting was sloppy. Globs of paint were found around the trim work. Spackle was not sanded full smooth and then painted over, leaving the walls not looking smooth. Paint was splash on the cabinets, door handles and hardware, and floors. They left debris in every room that they worked in that we had to clean. They also put chalk between the ceiling and cabinets in the kitchen when it wasn't asked for and when it looked terrible, the owner removed it and scraped the ceiling significantly, then had to be asked to fix his mess. In the end, that area looked worse than it did before the job. This is not a company that respects your house and puts care into their work to make your house better."

"Estimator quoted 2 days labor and $1700. They spent 3.5 hours altogether and did the worst painting job I've ever seen done by a professional painter. When I called the estimator to recalculate the bill they said NO. You wanted painting, you got painting. No sanding, no spackling, no nothing. If a dead cat had been laying on the floor they would have painted right over it. But it was painted. The recoat time for the paint they used was 4 hours, so they could not possibly have done the job correctly to start with. The estimate was based on labor time which was quoted at 2 days. They worked less than one quarter of that time. But still charged the entire amount. All in all, a crap job and an expensive lesson."

You may need to provide your own paint, depending on the agreement you make with the painter. Some painters prefer that you buy the paint and they supply the labor. However, some professional painters get a better price on paint and can pass that savings along to you even after accounting for labor costs.
The average cost to paint a ceiling ranges from $3 to $8.50 per square foot, which is about $1 to $2.50 more per square foot than the cost to paint the walls. Rooms with high ceilings require working from a ladder or scaffolding and often include trim or detail work, which adds to the final price.
Professional painters charge $20 to $50 per hour, on average. Hourly rate cost factors include the complexity of the paint job, the type of paint, the height of the walls and ceiling, and the type of prep and repairs needed. For example, removing wallpaper costs an additional $3 per square foot because it can be very time consuming and labor intensive. Your location will also impact the hour rate.
