"Masonry by Tommy listened to our needs and offered ideas to make it better. He offers the best quality work. The workers are very professionals, polite, and neat. Their attention to detail and the appearance of their finished work is the best we have ever seen. In repointing old brick and laying concrete slabs, they matched the color of our 20-year-old masonry. I would highly recommend Tommy to everyone!"

"I am a widow of 2 years left with unfinished house inside and out. I had no choice with township on my back to just rely and trust strangers to get me through my darkest times. My experience was a mix. Some pride on their work and sadly others just rob you. I hired Chris because he smiled he listened he understood and he spent time to make sure he knew exactly what I wanted I needed and very important what I could afford. The end result Chris finished my husbandâ s retaining wall-absolutely perfect. My husband the perfectionist would agree. Chris did the front stairs my long walkway . Grass is now growing. All thank you Chris. Yes Chris is honest reliable. At the end you will say a job well done."

After a clarifications, we signed a contract and work began within a few months. The crew was super courteous and easy to work with. Any issues or concerns I had during the installation were immediately addressed without any hesitation or pushback. I am very pleased with the finished product."

Masonry questions, answered by experts

Masonry is an umbrella term that involves adhering individual building materials together using an adhesive, so many different things are considered masonry. These include constructing stone or brick walls or facades, installing stucco siding, installing backsplashes or tile floors, and even installing glass block windows, in some cases. Masonry materials include natural stone, clay bricks, concrete bricks, glass blocks, and tiles.

This is largely dependent on the size and hardness of the rock, but a range of tools might work, including hammers, chisels, rock hammers, sledge hammers, and more. You'll need a jackhammer for the very biggest rock-breaking jobs.

Masonry uses units like bricks, cement blocks, and stone with mortar between them. Mortar is generally made of sand and a type of cement. Examples of masonry include the brick or stone on a house, chimney, or freestanding wall. Concrete is a mixture of water, sand, stone aggregate, and other materials, and is poured into forms or moldings. Types of concrete applications include driveways, garage and basement floors, and poured concrete walls in basements and crawl spaces.

You should use cement for a chimney crown. The purpose of the chimney crown is to protect the mortar below from water damage and the effects of weather. For this reason, chimney crowns should only be made using cement. When repairing a crown, use caulks and sealants designed for cement repair rather than mortar repair.

According to the Earthquake Country Alliance—a public and private alliance in California that works to improve earthquake and tsunami readiness—reports that unreinforced masonry, such as stone, bricks, and hollow clay tiles, is more susceptible to earthquake damage. The mortar between bricks isn’t as stable as other building materials and methods.
