Small jobs welcome

"Fabiano and Will went over and beyond on this project. Hiring a carpenter you have never worked with before involves a certain degree of faith. That's what I did when hiring Fabiano Construction to build a triple-tiered flower bed on my rooftop with a trellis on my Philadelphia row-home rooftop. I was not disappointed. Fabiano and Will are a great team, they are very kind and they do great work. What more could you ask for? I am having both of them come back to rebuild my grill countertop and cabinetry! I have no regrets using Fabiano Construction and I will continue to use them in the future!"

"Joe and the crew were very knowledgeable, professional and friendly. It was good to watch them work, the detail of their crafts is second to none!! Came on time, charged me what was quoted and my door was installed with decorative molding that exceeded what I envisioned. I am so pleased with their work. I have a few other jobs that I will be calling them to complete."

"Working with Greg was great. Hired to refresh our front porch railings, build new stairs for a back door, and fix a cracking bedroom ceiling. Good expectations were set and the communication was good if anything unexpected came up in the work. The work all looks great and was completed very close to the target date with some reasonable delays because of weather. We're very happy with the quality of everything and are thankful for the much needed refresh of a few things before we put the house on the market."

"I hired Aztec for major repairs due to termite damage. They were prompt, professional, and easy to work with. They came in less than 10 days after we contacted them to FINISH the work. First, they evaluated the damage and walked me through the needed repairs which included placing three new steel support beams along with two main horizontal wood beams and several sistered beams. They were able to complete the work, once they started, in three days. At each step, I was informed of progress and there were no surprises (from my end). The work included everything from removing electrical wiring and then replacing it, pouring the new steel vertical support beams, affixing them solidly into my concrete floor, and then pacing the numerous horizontal beams. I could not recommend AZtec (and Greg!) more."

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Framing a house with steel generally takes less time—around five to eight weeks—than most building materials. The steel components can also be made quickly off-site and manufactured with pre-punched holes for running piping and electrical wiring, which will lessen the prep work and extra labor during construction.

Baseboards don’t have to be nailed into studs. However, nailing them into studs adds to their stability. When studs aren’t available, you can secure them with drywall nails directly into the drywall and adhesive. Always aim to nail into studs, especially in high-traffic or impact-prone areas.

Most of the time, you’ll want to use screws on your subfloor rather than nails. Nails can actually weaken plywood, whereas screws can easily penetrate without damage. They also form a more secure connection because of their shape, preventing squeaky floors and tightly holding the subfloor in place. That said, some contractors do prefer nails depending on the type of floor covering because they allow for more flexibility.

Bump-out additions can add some space to a closet without requiring any significant structural work. This entails pushing back the existing rear or side of the closet, simply moving the wall into either an adjacent room or unused space. For ground-floor closets, this could even be extended to the exterior of the home, but that has its own complications. Bump-outs are a good discussion to have with your contractor if you’re just looking to increase the space a little—not renovate the entire closet space.

Learning how to frame a house includes picking the right lumber for the job. Most people will want to pick pine, spruce, or fir for the framing. These types of lumber are affordable and produce sturdy framing for structures. Look for kiln-dried lumber to reduce the risk of shrinkage or insect damage after installation. As part of what’s included in framing a house when you hire a professional, the contractor should order the lumber, so you don’t have to worry about finding the right lumber.
