"Bernard and his workers did a great job, took a little longer than we expected because of scheduling conflicts. They removed old broken up concrete floor and about 8 " of dirt from under. Then installed 8" of crushed stone and a reinforced 4" concrete floor over, and finished with a sealer. Finished floor looks great, and they did a complete clean up. Haven't driven on it yet as it has been less than a week. I would hire again for any concrete work."

Decorative Concrete questions, answered by experts

For homeowners, it’s better to dry grind concrete. Dry grinding is the method described above and can be done by experienced DIYers for smaller projects. Wet grinding requires a big volume of water, a way to collect the slurry created by the water and dust, and an environmentally-safe place to dispose of the slurry. In general, only professionals do wet grinding.

You should have at least 4 to 6 inches of compactable base under your concrete slab. Your contractor may recommend more depending on the structure.

Yes, concrete can set in rain, but it’s best if you pour concrete 4 to 8 hours before any rain to ensure it won’t impact its strength and appearance. Exposure to heavy rain during the early stages (the first 48 hours after pouring) can significantly reduce the structural integrity of the concrete. Over time, cracking is more likely due to softer concrete.

The prevention steps are essentially the same, no matter the patio material. Keep the surface clean and maintained. Ensure there's no debris buildup, and cover the whole thing in a quality sealant. If it's the start of a season or it's been a while since you've cleaned the area, use a pressure washer.

You should sand concrete before painting, as it helps remove any irregularities and pieces that stick out from the surface. This not only helps the paint look better but it prevents any unwanted water absorption.
