"I hired Stuart's Painting for deck repair, re-staining, house painting, and ceiling repair. The work was done very quickly and professionally. The price was more than fair and they were reasonably within their initial estimate when the work was done. My deck and house look were looking in rough shape, and now it all looks great again. Highly recommend this company."

"The entire project went very well.  It was a 3 man team including the Owner Kevin.  We knew what they were working on, how long it should take and what room or rooms would be next.  They were very courteous, sensitive to our needs, minimized the disruption such a project can cause and professional.  All furniture, floors and carpets were carefully protected with plastic sheeting or drop clothes.  The results were excellent, we, our family and friends were very impressed.  The deck looks fantastic and is barefoot safe. One friend, a realtor, asked for K-Nells contact info for referrals.

Deck Staining questions, answered by experts

Staining a deck with a rag is typically a better option than using a brush, as it helps the stain penetrate deeper into the wood. However, both brushes and rags are best reserved for detailed work because using these tools on an entire deck can require tediously crawling around on your hands and knees. A pad applicator, sprayer, or roller are preferred alternatives to applying stain over the majority of a deck. Use a rag for railings and other detailed work, and let the wood soak up as much of the stain as possible before wiping away drips or pools.

Liquid rubber is great for waterproofing, but it can damage your deck if it’s not applied correctly. First, it can trap moisture in the wood if the deck isn’t completely dry before application.  Second, applying it too thickly can create a heavy, rubbery surface layer that peels and cracks under fluctuating temperatures. For the best results, ensure the wood is completely dry before application, and apply the liquid rubber in thin, even coats. A quick inspection every now and then will help you catch any issues early, keeping your deck protected and looking its best.

Two coats of stain are ideal for the best protection and aesthetic appeal. However, if your decking is made of particularly dense hardwood, you may only need one coat. If you want an intense color, two coats are ideal.

Yes, it is generally a very good idea to seal your deck after pressure washing. Power washing removes not only dirt and debris but also a thin layer of wood, leaving the surface exposed and more susceptible to weathering. Sealing is almost always needed after this process. After a general cleaning, sealing isn't automatically necessary if the existing sealant is still intact. You can test the surface by placing a few drops of water on it. If the water beads up, the sealant is working. If it soaks into the wood, it's time to apply a new sealant. If it has been a few years, it's wise to remove the old sealant, wash the deck, and reseal for maximum protection.

The staining or painting process involves cleaning the deck, sanding surfaces, applying a primer (if needed), and carefully applying stain or paint for an even, lasting finish.
