Since fleas reproduce so quickly, the mere presence of one flea could mean you have an infestation on your hands. Hundreds and even thousands of fleas can lurk in your pet’s fur, carpet, furniture, and even your body. If you see fleas jumping on household items or notice your pet scratching more than usual, those are signs of infestation.

When you’re checking for bed bugs in your home, start by searching for the telltale signs rather than the insects themselves, as they tend to stay hidden during the day. Here are the key signs of a bed bug infestation:

  • Rust-colored or reddish stains on mattresses and bed sheets

  • Dark spots on fabric

  • Shed skins

  • Fecal matter (looks like black spots)

As for fleas, you can typically spot them on your pet. If you notice them scratching themselves excessively, look for bites and bugs on their skin and fur.

Based on infestation severity, semi-annual or annual checks are recommended.

Besides checking your pet’s fur, you can use two other tests to find fleas in your home: the white sock test and the water and lamp test.

To perform the white sock test, simply put on a pair of long white socks and drag your feet along the carpets in your home. Fleas will gravitate to the heat created by your socks. The water and lamp test involves placing a bowl of water on the floor and shining a light over it. Fleas will then be attracted to the light and land in the bowl of water.

The answer varies. Some infestations may get taken care of in one treatment, while others may require two to four in a row, or even monthly or semi-monthly visits over the course of a year. The best way to get rid of bed bugs quickly is to investigate and treat at the first sign of bed bugs and not to let it wait.
