"I was a Turf Care customer and they were a great company and never had any complaints. But after they merged with Trugreen it has been nothing but problems. The first problem was my aeration didn't happen on schedule, then they had to reschedule it, then they were suppose to call ahead of time so I could put my dogs away before any treatments, they show up without letting me know ( I have two older dogs that have full run of the yard all day). We get all these problem worked out after a number of phone calls with the local office. Now for the service - my lawn looks worse than it ever has. I have had to call them out multiple times between services and the issue is only getting worse. I ask for the service manager to come out and take a look at how bad the issue is and all I get is a call and told to call him back in a couple of weeks if I don't see any improvements. I haven't seen improvements all season, it has only gotten worse and the only thing I get is a call and attitude. The techs that show have been nice (never the same person) but they have always been nice, but the local branch personnel are very lacking. I would not hire them, they are not about making your lawn look good or about customer service, they are about taking your money and excuses. They have blamed everybody but themselves for the weeds and the service. I wish that Turf Care would never have merged, they were a great company and great to work with. I am looking for a new company for upcoming year."

Lawn Fertilization and Treatment questions, answered by experts

A few common lawn maintenance mistakes include failure to use fertilizer, not committing to a yearly maintenance plan, and under- and over-watering your lawn. Other issues that might arise include poor timing of lawn treatments. It’s important to dethatch, aerate, and reseed your yard at the right time of year—preferably in early spring.

The quickest way to kill weeds is to burn them, pour boiling water on them, or pull them out by hand. Each of these methods works instantaneously. Beyond that, using vinegar for grass works in a couple of hours, as do herbicides you can buy at the store. The slowest way to kill weeds is to starve them of nutrients and sunlight with mulch or fabric covers.

At its core, soil pH is a measure of how many hydrogen ions are present in your soil. In highly acidic soil (low pH), plant growth is difficult due to reduced microbial availability in the dirt.

In highly alkaline soil, plants may struggle to grow due to iron deficiencies. In either case, a lack of balance deprives grass or plants of some key nutrients they need to grow.

A pH reading of 6 to 7.5 is ideal for most plants. Slight acidity is, generally speaking, less of an issue than slight alkalinity. Many plants can still thrive in slightly acidic soil.

Yes, it’s always a good idea to fertilize your lawn before a major leveling project. This step gives your grass the nutrients necessary for healthy growth, helping it recover and replenish itself faster. However, you should do this at least three weeks in advance, as the leveling process can disturb the newly-applied fertilizer.

Bahia grass is not difficult to grow, but you might need patience for this slow-growing grass. Whereas some grass species, like Bermuda grass, can take 1 to 2 weeks to germinate, Bahia grass can take two or three times as long, making it seem like it won’t grow. But again, once your Bahia grass is established, it requires little maintenance. Its deep root system makes it a very durable grass that can bounce back after freezes and droughts.
