Rod Kush’s Furniture was incorporated on August 7, 1987, as Furniture On Consignment, Inc. Furniture on Consignment was started by Rod Kush after a successful career in the National Football League with the Buffalo Bills and Houston Oilers. The merchandise sold when Furniture on Consignment opened for business was primarily used furniture. As the business evolved, it moved away from selling just used furniture to also carrying first quality new merchandise. The company relocated to 72nd and L Street in 1992 from the previous location of 94th and J Street and experienced tremendous growth, adding Appliance & Electronics, Carpet & Flooring, Rent to Own, and Mrs. K’s to the Omaha location, and then subsequently opening additional locations in Lincoln, Nebraska in 1996, Fremont, Nebraska in 2003, and Norfolk in 2004. In addition, Mattressland stores were added in Bellevue and Lincoln, Rent-to-Owns in Benson, South Omaha, Council Bluffs and the Mall of the Bluffs. In 2005, Rod also opened numerous Cash Advance locations around the Omaha and Lincoln areas. In April of 2006, the Rent-to-Own locations separated into their own stand alone company and the retail furniture business was closed. In October of 2006, 7 Day Furniture, Inc was established at the old 72nd and L Street location in Omaha more streamlined and efficient than its predecessor. As the retail trade began to grow, the rent-to-own and cash advance stores were permanently closed in 2009 and a new retail outlet was opened in Lincoln on May 15, 2009. Even as the economy trended downward in 2008-2009, 7 Day Furniture managed to keep the sales steady and increasing. In August 2011, the Lincoln store was renovated and a new showroom and warehouse opened.

Furniture Reupholstery questions, answered by experts

Upholstering allows personalization, extends furniture life, conserves resources, refreshes decor, and often costs less than buying new pieces.

In most cases, it is more affordable to reupholster furniture than it is to replace it, but it depends on the quality and age of the furniture you’re considering getting reupholstered. Antique pieces are always worth reupholstering, as it’s the only way to preserve the piece and extend its life. Newer pieces of furniture are more often made using lower-quality materials like medium-density fiberboard or plywood that don’t have the same lifespan as things like hardwood. For newer pieces, your furniture reupholstery specialist should be able to help you determine the best course of action.

Consider durability, color, texture, room use, and personal style when selecting fabric. Fabrics like linen, cotton, or microfiber offer versatility and strength.

It is usually worth repairing leather furniture, as it tends to retain its value, provided you care for the material. A typical repair for leather furniture will cost about $250, which is significantly more affordable than replacing the furniture entirely. Even if you spend toward the upper end of the typical cost range for a full reupholstering—around $4,000—you’ll still save money over replacing it. Of course, the quality of the leather and the piece of furniture matters. Consult a leather repair professional about whether it’s worth repairing your leather furniture.

Ongoing maintenance of your leather furniture is the only way to prevent it from peeling and cracking. Real leather will peel and crack as it dries out. Leather conditioners are a great way to protect your leather furniture from drying out, and you’ll need to apply it about twice each year. It’s also a good idea to keep abrasive materials away from your leather to prevent cracking and peeling, including belt buckles, shoes, and multi-surface cleaners, especially those that contain alcohol.
