Asphalt is not a type of concrete. While both are a common type of pavement, asphalt is composed of aggregates (like sand and gravel) and bitumen; concrete is a mixture of cement, aggregates, and water. Here are some of the key differences between asphalt and concrete driveways.

Newly poured concrete is prone to small, fine cracks within the first 30 days of installation, but most noticeable cracks will disappear within that time frame. If a crack is greater than 1 inch, consider contacting the person who installed your wall to inspect the job.  

Thicker concrete is less likely to crack due to extreme weather changes. At a minimum, concrete slabs should be at least 4 inches, but if you’re worried about the concrete cracking under the weight of heavy machinery or from the freeze-thaw patterns of your climate, you should use even thicker concrete. If there is standing liquid on your concrete, remove it before attempting any of the above cleaning methods. For small amounts of water, use rags, a bucket, and a mop. For larger areas of liquid, lay down cat litter or baking soda to soak up the water first. If you have extremely large pools of water sitting on your concrete, break out the wet vac and get to work.
