"Bill built us a new deck exactly like the last one we had. The old deck started separating from the house and was a immediate hazard. Bill responded immediately, analyzed our needs and provided us with a quick estimate, completed the project in 5 days even with intermittent rain problems. All work was done quickly, efficiently and on time. The workers even removed items from the old deck and returned them when they were done. Would definitely recommend for your decking needs."

"It is my pleasure to write a review of the flooring repair work done by John Pierson. The work performed was very well done and I can say that I would have no problem in recommending John as a very good person to do flooring repair. Very nice person, easy to get along with and his work performed was great ! Thank you very much for sending him to me for my repair project. Edward Ehrlich Omaha, Nebraska"

"Deck Stars did AMAZING work on repairing pavers around our pool and repairs on our deck. They actually hand carved the posts to match the existing posts. They were such hard workers, here with a crew from Sun up to Sun down and got the project done in TWO days!! The attention to detail is top notch! I would recommend to anyone and will definitely call them again!"

Deck Repair questions, answered by experts

There are several methods for attaching stair stringers to a deck. The best way is to bolt the stringers to the deck joists using three carriage bolts in a triangular pattern. This method offers the sturdiest fit for stairs that won’t budge. Alternatively, attach the stringers to the deck rims using lag bolts or to the posts using adjustable slope hangers.

You do not have to dig footers for a deck as long as it meets local code and holds up to weather in your area. If you live somewhere that experiences high winds and earthquakes, you may need to dig for your deck posts. Deck blocks, post anchors with base plates, and helical pile systems are the three no-dig deck post options you can choose from if local code permits.

A wood deck requires annual cleaning and regular inspections for loose or broken boards, nails, and screws. It should be refinished by applying a stain or sealer every two to three years to protect the wood from water damage, rot, mildew, and sun fading. The exact frequency can depend on the climate and the deck's exposure to sun and moisture. If your deck is painted, it will need repainting approximately every 10 years. Signs that your deck needs refinishing include faded, splintering, or warping boards.

Local building codes don’t specify the number of steps a deck can have before a railing is required, mainly because stair height varies widely. Most areas require decks 30 inches or higher to have a railing. While not exact, that roughly equates to four to seven steps.

A random orbital sander is best for sanding a deck because it is easier to handle than other power sanders and is less likely to damage the wood. Most decks are made of types of softwood, so a gentler sanding process is essential to prevent permanent blemishes. For example, belt sanders can gouge softwoods.
